I think I've just got to admit that serialized manga isn't for me. It takes no time at all to read and I'm left with so many unanswered questions.

The art is fine (the demons are particularly nice, but the adult women have some weird proportions), but the story is so repetitive - I don't need Norman restating everything they've learned every 3rd page. ( )

Emma, Norman, and Ray are the brightest kids at the Grace Field House orphanage. Under the care of a woman they all call “Mom”, all the kids enjoy good food, clean clothes, and the perfect environment to learn and grow. One day though, Emma and Norman discover the dark truth about what lies outside the walls of their “perfect” environment, and now, they’re going to do whatever it takes to keep everyone safe.

I watched the anime and when I looked up to see if there was going to be a season two, I was stoked to find out there was a manga series about it! It was so hard to find the first few volumes in person, but thankfully my library had the first five volumes and I immediately put them all on hold. I’m in the process of ordering the volumes for my own personal collection now. I’ve only read one other, short manga series before this and am excited that this will be my first full series I will read!

That being said, I LOVE this. It takes such a quick, dark turn so fast my mouth still dropped open slightly while reading it, even though I knew what was coming from watching the anime. The anime does seem to follow the anime quite closely, though I know there will be a few changes coming up. I’m hoping to get my hands on as many of the volumes as I can before season two comes out in January.

Emma is my hero and I love her spunk and the devotion she has for her family. Norman is that best friend anyone can ask her. Ray too - even with his bit of “no-nonsense” attitude. He says it like it is and everyone needs that, at least every once in a while. Emma especially seems to need both boys in order to keep herself from running and doing things pretty drastically and unplanned. Those boys help her stay grounded.

The artwork is amazing and though in black and white for most of it, still shows such a beautiful range of emotion and settings. Even when things were super dark, nothing was ever hard to read or see.

Since I loved the anime, I know I’m going to love the written series. I would recommend this to a mature audience, as it does deal with some heavy subject manner. ( )

While rereading this series, I realize how the story compares to real-world animal agriculture.

Basically, the kids are the animals and the demons are the humans.

In the next volumes, it's shown that demons also thank their food before eating. I don't think Emma and the others would appreciate that. Rather than thanking your food, why not apologize to them instead? Since they're just being eaten for pleasure.

Like these kids, animals also die young. Most of them don't even reach a year old before being slaughtered. They could've lived their lives for decades if only humans don't eat them.

There's also this picture from Vol. 6:

So, Grace Field is a free-range farm. Organic. Yay, now I don't feel bad anymore. :D

And:

This is the "since the Bible says it, it must be fine" that I also used when I was Christian.

Well, those are just some of the comparisons that I saw. But that's not related to the story.

I'm currently reading Volume 7. I'll just edit this when I see more from the next volumes that I might want to add. I don't want to 'review' all of the volumes.

I was really excited to read this because I absolutely loved the anime. I just want to say, I knew what I was getting into when I picked this up because of seeing the anime first, but I envy the people who don't know! It's just brilliant.

The story is about a group of children who have lived their whole life in an orphanage, living happy lives until they are adopted by new parents, who then discover the dark truth behind their lives. It starts of cutesy, with a bit of an ominous feeling, and then it gets downright horrific. The artwork is great. It's super cute, but also really creepy and disturbing. There's a great balance bewteen the cuteness and the creepiness.

The three main characters are Emma, who is bubbly and optimistic, and really cares about her younger brothers and sisters; Norman, who is very smart and good at strategy; and Ray, who is a bit edgy (check out that fringe). Ray is my favourite, I really have a soft spot for that kind of character. This manga really makes you feel for all of the characters, and then it hurts you. It's brilliant. I'm really looking forward to reading the next volume. ( )

This is a really interesting premise for a manga. The art is really good and definitely adds to the suspense of the kids' cat and mouse game with their opponents. The cliffhanger isn't amazing, but I'm really curious to see where it goes from here.

3.5 stars

I would recommend this for someone who likes jailbreak stories for sure.
