Trying to decide between 4.5 and 5, but nevertheless this was amazing. I was totally enthralled, beginning to end. ( ) Plot-driven Reconstruction-era historical fantasy where an undead plague derailed the American Civil War, and where slavery was abolished but immediately replaced with government-mandated zombie hunter training. While Dread Nation tells an alternate history of the U.S., its premise still felt relevant to today, and author Justina Ireland works hard to do justice to this time period's racial tension and dissatisfaction. I am not the target audience for this book; I prefer character development over plot progression, historical fiction isn't my cup of tea, and I'm not into zombie horror. But even with all that working against me, I could tell that Dread Nation was quality and would appeal to many readers for good reason. Dang, this really is such a phenomenal world Ireland has created! I adore the blend of history and zombie, and the main characters (Jane and Kate) are a BLAST to read. They're both so well fleshed-out and their dynamic together is phenomenal - I would have either of them on my zombie-fighting team in a heartbeat. This book loses nothing on the reread, but just allows the reader to appreciate all the details, humor, and action all the more. A review in dualities: 1. Action-packed zombie thriller *and* very smart, illuminating commentary on American history. 2. This book kept me up at night because I couldn't stop reading *and* because it gave me nightmares. 3. It's a perfect October read because of Halloween *and* because of upcoming elections in November. inga recensioner | lägg till en recension

Jane McKeene is born two days before the dead begin to walk the battlefields of Civil War-era America---derailing the War Between the States and changing the nation forever. Years later, Jane is studying to become an Attendant, trained in both weaponry and etiquette to protect the well-to-do. It's a chance for a better life for Negro girls like Jane. But that's not a life Jane wants. Almost finished with her education at Miss Preston's School of Combat in Baltimore, Jane is set on returning to her Kentucky home and doesn't pay much mind to the politics of the eastern cities, with their talk of returning America to the glory of its days before the dead rose. But when families around Baltimore County begin to go missing, Jane is caught in the middle of a conspiracy, one that finds her in a desperate fight for her life against some powerful enemies. And the restless dead, it would seem, are the least of her problems. Inga biblioteksbeskrivningar kunde hittas. |
