We all say there is no justice in this world. But what if there really was? What if the souls of murdered children were able to return briefly to this world, inhabit adult bodies and wreak ultimate revenge on the monsters who had killed them, stolen their lives? Such is the unfathomable mystery confronting ex-NYPD detective Willow Wylde, fresh out of rehab and finally able to find a job running a Cold Case squad in suburban Detroit. Mystical, harrowing and ultimately tremendously moving, this is a truly original psychological thriller for fans of Shirley Jackson.… (mer)

The plot for this book is incredibly creative! I love it when I come across a book that takes genre-normal and blows it all to pieces! With that said, there are some dark events in this book that some might not want to delve into -- murder, rape, etc of children. Now given the title of the book, that's not a surprise, but just be aware before you read this story.

The basics: The spirits of murdered children get to return to the Earth for a limited time to exact revenge on their killers. The spirits inhabit the bodies of certain adults while on Earth. These landlords are dead people who are reanimated for the sole purpose of assisting the murdered children. The murdered kids attend secret meetings disguised as AA meetings at churches to discuss their journeys. In the course of an investigation, former NYPD detective Willow Wylde discovers these meetings. When he realizes those attending are actually slain children, Willow learns a whole new understanding of life and death.

This story is incredibly creative, inventive and mind-blowing. But in places, the execution was a bit rambling and confusing. There are just too many side characters and subplots going on all at once. It muddied the waters a bit too much, making the plot a bit confusing at times. That being said, the story itself was so interesting and bizarre that it kept my attention the entire book, no matter how rambling things got. I love the character of Willow. He's middle aged, feels tired and washed up. Alcoholism has robbed him of a lot, but he's trying to pull it together to do something with the rest of his life. Very realistic character.

All in all, an interesting book. I enjoyed reading it, and I loved the creative plot. But it could have been a bit more focused. The completely cool concept kept me reading. I enjoyed this book despite the plot chasing rabbits a bit.

The front cover is totally perfect!

A book with a really interesting premise that never manages to live up to its potential. It got very hyped up as a scary book, horror-esque, and what we get is a lackluster smattering of ideas with nothing to bind them together. Also didn't have nearly high enough stakes for me to care as the book went on. We're given the idea that crazy things are happening, but it'll all be fine in the end at the start of the book. Kinda takes the wind out of anything we might see later. Too many plot lines, not enough plot. I had really been hoping for more. ( )

I don't know why I picked up this book to read, whether it was on a list or if it was highlighted at the library. In any case, I found the book in my pile to read. The book is about murdered children who return "to life" in the form of tenants in a landlord's body. The "landlord" is also dead, and provide a body for the tenant to use while they embark on achieving their moment of balance. Willow Wylde, an alcoholic, and a cop, senses their presence. He becomes part of a cold case squad, and is assigned to find the killer of a brother and sister who disappeared 20 years earlier. It so happens that Troy and Maya, the abducted children, were the children of friends of his.
This is a very disturbing story of child abductors and torturers. It tries to allow the children to confront their abusers and murderers.
An interesting concept, but it was a little too creepy for me.

I won an Advanced Readers Copy in a GOODREADS giveaway sponsored by Dutton. Awesome cover/Title. Great premise and story line. The writing style is very loose and takes a while to adapt to but it adds to the peculiar nature of the plot. Just be away that it is a bit jumbled and keeps circling around; I got lost several times and had to re-read some spots. ( )

I purchased this book on Amazon to read. All opinions are my own. 🌟🌟🌟 A Guide For Murdered Children by Sarah Sparrow. When I read this synopsis I immediately wanted this book. The spooky premise behind it was intriguing. I was let down. 😐 The idea behind this story is amazing a retired drunk cop with visions of the dead and children seeking revenge in murders seems exactly like the perfect balance for justice. However, the way this one is written with the bouncing back and forth through the timeline and the thoughts of the characters seem to drone on and on. Overall the story was great, the plot twists were well laid out and it does all kind of come together in the last 100 pages or so but those first 300 you have to be dedicated to getting through them.
