A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER  A WALL STREET JOURNAL BESTSELLER A USA TODAY BESTSELLER  A NATIONAL INDIEBOUND BESTSELLER  From the author of The Guest Room, a powerful story about the ways an entire life can change in one night: A flight attendant wakes up in the wrong hotel, in the wrong bed, with a dead man - and no idea what happened. Cassandra Bowden is no stranger to hungover mornings. She's a binge drinker, her job with the airline making it easy to find adventure, and the occasional blackouts seem to be inevitable. She lives with them, and the accompanying self-loathing. When she awakes in a Dubai hotel room, she tries to piece the previous night back together, counting the minutes until she has to catch her crew shuttle to the airport. She quietly slides out of bed, careful not to aggravate her already pounding head, and looks at the man she spent the night with. She sees his dark hair. His utter stillness. And blood, a slick, still wet pool on the crisp white sheets. Afraid to call the police - she's a single woman alone in a hotel room far from home - Cassie begins to lie. She lies as she joins the other flight attendants and pilots in the van. She lies on the way to Paris as she works the first class cabin. She lies to the FBI agents in New York who meet her at the gate. Soon it's too late to come clean-or face the truth about what really happened back in Dubai. Could she have killed him? If not, who did? Set amid the captivating world of those whose lives unfold at forty thousand feet, The Flight Attendant unveils a spellbinding story of memory, of the giddy pleasures of alcohol and the devastating consequences of addiction, and of murder far from home.… (mer)

Cassie Bowden, a flight attendant, awakens in Dubai in bed with a dead man with whom she had been flirting with on the plane. Cassie's memory is foggy and she doesn't remember many details from the night before. So she decides to lie about her whereabouts the night of the murder. Once back in the US, Cassie decides that she needs a lawyer since the FBI is now getting involved and her photo from the hotel footage has been circulating. Cassie tells what she remembers but since she drinks alcoholically, she's not terribly clear on what happened or if she could have possibly committed the murder. ( )

My current book theme seems to be stories that revolve around the inability to remember accurately what has happened. And let's face it, our memories are usually much more flawed than I think we care to admit. "The Flight Attendant" starts with a bang, one of those setups that would feel totally at home in a Hitchcock film, and then spirals out into a much more complicated story. I guess another theme of books I seem to be reading is the unlikeable narrator and Cassie, our voice in this book does some things that had me practically yelling at the book in my hand (yes, I know it is not real but I do get into the books I'm reading!). But with all of her failings I still found myself liking her and rooting for her. She is incredibly human, almost too much so, and I could see a lot of my own shortcomings manifested in her character. Judge not lest ye be judged as they say. I'm not sure that the machinations of the plot, especially some of those near the end, worked perfectly for me but the story served the purpose of bringing the characters to life and that is the strength of this book. It also gave me even more respect for the work that flight attendants do. ( )

I listened to this book while walking, which means often my attention was diverted. The story was reasonably entertaining with the typical twists and turns of a good murder mystery. I continue to be bothered by audio books where the narrators are trying to affect a character of the opposite gender. I would rather they just read the dialogue straight. This would be a good beach read. ( )

To say the main character, Cassandra Bowden, is a hot mess would be an understatement. She is an alcoholic and drinks so much she is known to black out. As a flight attendant she travels a lot and this allows her to party with men in cities all over the world. Things unravel for her when she wakes up in a hotel room with a dead man in the bed with her.
With an opening like that you can’t help but be drawn into the story. While I think parts of the story are a little farfetched it did not detract from my overall liking of the story. The characters are well done and the plot moves fast. I liked that I did not have everything figured out.
I zipped through this one in no time. Great choice for mystery and thriller fans alike.
Note: My rating would be 3.5 if I was offered a choice of ½ stars. I rounded up to four stars because I felt the story was better than a three. ( )

So 3.5 stars. I’ve really enjoyed all of the other books I’ve read by Chris Bohjalian, but this one didn’t grab my attention quickly. It felt drawn out but also rushed. I’m not sure I was a fan of the main character. Not for one particular reason -just kind of overall lack of ... something. But I still have a long list of books by this author to go so hopefully the next one is a bit more thrilling. ( )
