Strong was a lucid writer and excellent experimentalist who became a role model for young physicists. His book provides the relevant theory for use by practitioners. An Appendix on Fourier spectroscopy - at the time (1950s), an impractical but promising technique - provides a glimpse of leading-edge experimental science. Inspirational.

Also illustrated by the the beautiful drawings of Roger Hayward, who also illustrated the Amateur Scientist section of Scientific American magazine. (
