"This is a fairy tale of blood and bullets. It is a story about time, and age, and ages, and about friendship, and love, and regret. It is a story of two women and three men who cannot die. Mostly. Their names are Andy, Nicky, Joe, Booker, and Nile. They are soldiers, and their war never ends. They've been everywhere, seen everything, and fought in virtually every conflict through the present day. For centuries, they have kept their existence hidden, never staying in one place too long, always moving from mission to mission. But today, the shadows aren't so dark, and they are about to learn that secrets are impossible to keep. And you absolutely do not want to get in their way when those secrets are laid bare..."--Back cover.… (mer)

Really enjoyed this. Not sure if it's because I watched the movie recently and really enjoyed it, so this is hitting me in my "more of the same" hindbrain or if it's because I haven't read a traditional American-style comic book in a while so reading this scratched a satisfying itch I didn't know I have. It's a good story and enjoyable to read, I'm really not trying to damn this comic with faint praise. But I do think I may have enjoyed it more because I read it at this particular moment in time. ( )

Not really understanding all the disdain this is getting heaped on it from the reviews I've read. Honestly, I really liked this one. Good story, well-paced, and an interesting concept.

Is the art perfect? No. But it works for the story for the most part, and god knows I've seen a lot worse.

And, while I know Goodreads is about the books, not the adaptations, I gotta say, the Netflix movie follows this storyline pretty much beat for beat.

Definitely reading the next volume. ( )

Even though I watched the movie first, reading the graphic novel was still enjoyable and it was so much fun trying to figure out the differences between the two, and think which was done better. I was definitely reading all of Andy’s dialogue in Charlize Theron’s voice because I can’t get her out of my head. And my favorite scene of the movie - Joe’s romantic confession about Nicky - was even more heartwarming and spectacular in the book and I don’t think I can forget it anytime soon.

To conclude, this is a cool story and the artwork is interesting (maybe not completely to my taste but I have no complaints) but I think you’ll enjoy it much more if you read it first and then watch the movie. But undoubtedly both the formats are very good and I can’t wait to read the sequel which releases later this year. ( )

I read the graphic novel after watching the movie, which I LOVED, so my review comes from that perspective (what to expect if you’re reading the book after watching the movie)

Compared to the movie, the book feels a little colder and emptier. One of the things I really enjoyed about the movie is how much the main characters seem to LIKE each other, trading little jokes and glances and moments of vulnerability throughout the whole thing. And there’s some of that in the book, don’t get me wrong, but not as much. The character of Andy in particular is much harder and more nihilistic in the book, though she does have some nice moments with Nile.

(There are a couple of things in the book that are even better than the movie. Joe’s van speech, for instance—the movie version just quotes part of it.)

So, you watched The Old Guard on Netflix and now you wondering whether you should read the graphic novel. I say go for it! It’s a good read, but it didn’t quite hit that same part of my “I want action movies with more feelings” lizard brain. Still very enjoyable. ( )

ngl enjoyed the movie a wee bit more, but I’d definitely stand in line for this. ( )
