The Deaths of December is another gripping crime thriller, following several characters that are expertly woven into the story of a serial killer. The reader is cleverly led through cliff hanging chapters and down blind alley's - if you think you know what is going to happen next, you will definitely be wrong.
I particularly liked wondering who The Photographer was, and also Carly, who the author didn't give away until the last possible moment, making me dread this characters outcome, because just because I didn't 'think' the author would do that, didn't mean they wouldn't!
I enjoyed the slow build, and nauseating middle where I waited on the edge of my seat for the worst to happen, and then the rush to the end as the detectives catch up to the killer and the chase is on. But as someone who likes ends to be tied up, this book didn't quite satisfy that need for me.
Why did DC Becky Greene need therapy? What had happened in her previous relationship? I found myself looking back at earlier chapters in case I missed something as this was reflected on at the end in a way that suggested the reader had already been told.
And would the whole point of the serial killers' actions never be resolved? Would an investigation not be undertaken? Sympathy was built on this premise, and even DC Carmine seemed unresolved on it, but it was left open, and although the reader was given a small amount of closure on it, none of the characters were. I had hoped for more.
A great read, that will keep you on the edge of your seat, with real believable characters. Susi Holliday has a particular gift for bringing them to life in a way that is immediate and relatable. I would recommend reading any or all of her books. ( )
