Second book in series after Road to Winter. Picks up with Finn and Kas ( Rose's sister) and the young girl they have promised to protect Willow, having survived a winter in Finn's old house with no contract from the outside world. Kas, in her grief has withdrawn into herself, whereas Finn has been busy teaching Willow how to lay traps and work a bow and arrow.
With the arrival of spring, Finn knows that the access to his town will soon be open and Ramage ( the self appointed local warlord) will come looking for revenge. He also knows he must keep the promise that he and Kaz made to Rose on her deathbed, that they will rescue her baby from Ramage's clutches, so the 3 move along the coast and discover that Ray has been burned in his house, the farmers in the Valley (Willow's parents) are being used as slaves to produce food for Ramage's men and that the baby has been moved to a remote unknown location.
They also come across a group of "Sileys" like Kas , who have formed a renegade outpost in the mountains and armed with guns and no friends of Ramages ask the group to join their band.
Suspenseful and gripping from beginning to end with a few heart stopping moments when the dog Rowdy is shot as is Willow's father Jack and it is touch and go whether they live; this is just as good as the first book. One for mature readers due to violence and language. ( )

Even though "Wilder Country" lacked the action and suspense that made "Road to Winter"such an exciting read, it was still a strong sequel. ( )
