But I had heard that the case was solved recently and it seemed like it would be fun to read an unsolved mystery book knowing that after I was done I could google the ending. I mostly found this very readable and page turning. For whatever reason - right now - I didn't find that it scared me too much to sleep or anything like that. It must have been so tough living in those places while this was all happening. I don't think I would have ever slept. The chapters have different feels since they were in different stages of being written when McNamara died. The ones fully accredited to her did read the best to me. One thing that was really terrible is that in the e-book copy I read - there were a lot of pictures at the end that were NOT keyed in to the reading - so I had no idea they existed. They would have been really great to look at as the book progressed and that is a pretty huge oversight on the part of the e-book publisher. The chapters that were not fully authored or finished by McNamara drag a little. I also think there was a point that it felt like a stronger editoral hand would have been appreciated to organize better - sometimes people are called their first name - sometimes their last - that kind of thing that would be okay in some books - but there are like 100 people mentioned in this book and it gets unwieldy. Anyway - very interesting. I am really relieved they caught this guy. DNA is such a powerful thing. I think true crime just isn't my thing. I had to push to finish this. Were in just a recounting of a dogged investigation I'd have given it 4 stars for how thorough and dogged it was. Given that the late Michelle McNamara could put a narrative together, knew when to press the gas pedal of a story and when to let up, knew that emotions should be deployed to support a narrative rather than shout over it makes this a brilliant, sad, unforgettable and important book. Audiobook narrator: excellent What a great read, flows well even though the original author diedbefore completing. I'm glad they took on the project. So sad that Michelle died before they caught him. Highly recommend if you aren't squeamish about murder details (yeah, there are a bunch! ) inga recensioner | lägg till en recension
For more than ten years, a mysterious and violent predator committed fifty sexual assaults in Northern California before moving south, where he perpetrated ten sadistic murders. Then in 1986 he disappeared, eluding capture by multiple police forces and some of the best detectives in the area. Three decades later, true crime journalist Michelle McNamara was determined to find the violent psychopath she called "the Golden State Killer." Michelle pored over police reports, interviewed victims, and embedded herself in the online communities that were as obsessed with the case as she was. At the time of the crimes, the Golden State Killer was between the ages of eighteen and thirty, Caucasian, and athletic--capable of vaulting tall fences. He always wore a mask. After choosing a victim--he favored suburban couples--he often entered their home when no one was there, studying family pictures, mastering the layout. He attacked while they slept, using a flashlight to awaken and blind them. Though they could not recognize him, his victims recalled his voice: a guttural whisper through clenched teeth, abrupt and threatening. This book--the masterpiece McNamara was writing at the time of her sudden death--offers an atmospheric snapshot of a moment in American history and a chilling account of a criminal mastermind and the wreckage he left behind. I was *really* surprised how much (everything) I didn't know about this serial rapist/killer and, basically, *everything* about the cases and the man. I'm almost hesitant to tell you what I didn't know in case you think it's a cut and dry case (as I feel it has been presented) because I don't want to ruin the shocks for you that I had hearing about some of the details.
I am so glad I finally got around to listening to this!
