For more than ten years, a mysterious and violent predator committed fifty sexual assaults in Northern California before moving south, where he perpetrated ten sadistic murders. Then in 1986 he disappeared, eluding capture by multiple police forces and some of the best detectives in the area. Three decades later, true crime journalist Michelle McNamara was determined to find the violent psychopath she called "the Golden State Killer." Michelle pored over police reports, interviewed victims, and embedded herself in the online communities that were as obsessed with the case as she was. At the time of the crimes, the Golden State Killer was between the ages of eighteen and thirty, Caucasian, and athletic--capable of vaulting tall fences. He always wore a mask. After choosing a victim--he favored suburban couples--he often entered their home when no one was there, studying family pictures, mastering the layout. He attacked while they slept, using a flashlight to awaken and blind them. Though they could not recognize him, his victims recalled his voice: a guttural whisper through clenched teeth, abrupt and threatening. This book--the masterpiece McNamara was writing at the time of her sudden death--offers an atmospheric snapshot of a moment in American history and a chilling account of a criminal mastermind and the wreckage he left behind.… (mer)

McNamara’s personal struggle & obsession with the GSK and her empathy toward his victims, thwarted investigators, and broken communities was the perfect lens through which to view this case. I expected a classic true-crime book but I got a moving, deeply human look into a decades-long trauma. It was also super cool to read this only a few weeks after they arrested a new suspect in the case, which was definitely due in no small part to McNamara’s research. ( )

Right as I started listening to the audiobook, which I tore through, the story started showing up on Cable news. I'm not sure what they had to say about it (we were on a family visit with no desire to watch it) that the author didn't. She was relentless and went deep.
I loved the parts where she came up for air, talking about the gifts her husband made for her that reflected her obsession. She was obviously a fiercely intelligent and driven woman. I wish she hadn't left us. ( )

4.5 stars rounded up.

Wrote a longer review for C-Spot Reviews but here's the gist: I enjoyed this book so much. There were times when I felt overwhelmed by all the information, names, and dates but by halfway through, I didn't want to stop listening. (I think this might have been easier to read with a physical copy or an ebook. Highlighting would have been helpful.)

This is more than just a true crime book (one without graphic violence and crime scene descriptions), it's a story about the author and her obsession.

I absolutely recommend.

First I find it so incredibly sad that the author, Michelle McNamara, passed away before she was able to see this horrible killer caught. It’s amazing that all the work she put into research helped to catch him in the end though, and I’d like to believe that wherever she is now, she is aware of this. Regarding the book, I think it was very well done considering she didn’t get to finish it and I think it did justice to all of her hard work. I was not aware of this killer until recently and I haven’t read anything else about him. I’ll be interested to see how her work compares to anything else that comes out now that he’s caught. ( )

I am a My Favorite Murder Murderino -- I have known about this book since it came out, at least, and have heard Georgia talk about it repeatedly. It's been on my "To be read/listened to" list but I never made it a high priority. When it popped up through my library as available as an audiobook, I immediately jumped at the chance to listen to it -- about time, right?

I was *really* surprised how much (everything) I didn't know about this serial rapist/killer and, basically, *everything* about the cases and the man. I'm almost hesitant to tell you what I didn't know in case you think it's a cut and dry case (as I feel it has been presented) because I don't want to ruin the shocks for you that I had hearing about some of the details.

I am so glad I finally got around to listening to this!

No butler, no second maid, no blood upon the stair.
No eccentric aunt, no gardener, no family friend
Smiling among the bric-a-brac and murder.
Only a suburban house with the front door open
And a dog barking at a squirrel, and the cars
Passing. The corpse quite dead. The wife in Florida.

Consider the clues: the potato masher in a vase,
The torn photograph of a Wesleyan basketball
team.
Scattered with check stubs in the hall;
The unsent fan letter to Shirley Temple,
The Hoover button on the lapel of the deceased,
The note: "To be killed this way is quite all right
with me."

Small wonder that the case remains unsolved,
Or that the sleuth, Le Roux, is now incurably in-
sane,
And sits alone in a white room in a white gown,
Screaming that all the world is mad, that clues
Lead nowhere, or to walls so high their tops cannot
be seen;
Screaming all day of war, screaming that nothing
can be solved.
