(Foreword) They work in the monumental museums that flank Washington's Mall and appear elsewhere in the nation's capital. (Preface) In 1976, the year of our nation's bicentennial, the noted Smithsonian anthropologist Lawrence Angel opened the great urnlike crypt in the Smithsonian Castle where the bones of James Smithson has reposed since they were brought to the United States at the turn of the century. (Introduction) When I first joined the staff of the Smithsonian - an event that had seemed to me as unlikely as being presented at court - I found myself hurrying along the Mall late one afternoon, engrossed in new duties and concerned about fulfilling them. | |

(Foreword) (Klicka för att visa. Varning: Kan innehålla spoilers.) And if, like Abou Ben Adhem, in the poem of the same name by Leigh Hunt, you can be written "as one that loves his fellow men," you'll feel that the old Institution, even on a dark, gloomy night that is filled with rustles and creaks and half-seen flutterings, is your welcoming home.
