This book. It should have been one I liked. I was sucked in by the promise of a time loop that's approached from a different perspective every time and a murder mystery on a large British estate. Plus a cover blurb that compared it to Agatha Christie. But this, sir, is no Agatha Christie novel and that comparison may have contributed to my dislike. There is no sparkle, no humour. Instead we're treated to a bleak, Gothic landscape more akin to Rebecca or The Masque of the Red Death, which I enjoy in their own ways but wasn't what I went in expecting (or in the mood for). The characters are all terrible people and they barely improve. I was pulled through the book by the plot and wanting to know how it turned out but none of the twists were so good that I felt compensated for the misery I had to sludge through. The novel knows how clever it is and is smug about it and I was not interested. YMMV. ( )

So clever. Concept would make a great series. (hint hint) ( )

An amazingly complex puzzle story, that I managed to follow along, even though I can't cope with plots that are too complex. ( )

I had to stay up till 2 in the morning once I realized I only had 100 pages left. The plot was twisted and ever changing, unearthing clues that I never would have thought of. How Stuart Turton made everything flow together while intertwining 8 different 1st person POV was crazy! And without ruining the time loops! A master. I'm sure if I read more closely I would find a small plot hole, but I couldn't find one on this initial read.

Each character felt distinctive and I found myself invested in them as well as loathing those whose personalities weren't redeeming. With that being said, there were so many different characters that it made keeping them straight difficult at times. I almost needed post it notes to keep everyone straight so had to take off 1/2 star. ( )

(13) Whoa - this was cool. A man wakes up seemingly with amnesia in the woods after being attacked and tries to make his way back to Blackheath - an old crumbling estate belonging to the Hardcastles. The Hardcastles have invited all the guests that were present 19 years ago when their young son was murdered. The murder was never completely solved and it seems the day is leading up to a big reveal. Soon though, the reader along with our protagonist realize all is not as it seems and we are led down quite the rabbit hole. it is mind-boggling. . .

I definitely could not figure this novel out. And for the most part that was a good thing. As the protagonist cycles through his different identities through different times in the day, it requires patience. What don't I understand because I am not supposed to understand yet, and what don't I understand because I missed something? But if you just roll with it, and occasionally flip back in time and re-read sections, it is pretty entertaining.

In the end I was left with questions that detracted a bit from my enjoyment - mostly related to how did Ravencourt figure things out? Everything seemed to hinge on his actions but at the time his actions were inexplicable. . . I think I missed some things. But honestly the ride was fun and I absolutely love books with time-travel aspects and perplexing mysteries with hidden clues and red herrings. So I would definitely read this author again.

Without spoiling I will say the overarching explanation for the reason the players are gathered at Blackheath is quite deux-ex-machina and didn't really work for me. But again, despite these flaws - Bravo! So original and clever - I loved it. ( )

To my parents, who gave me everything and asked for nothing. My sister, first and fiercest of my readers from the bumblebees onwards. And my wife, whose love, encouragement, and reminders to look up from my keyboard once in a while, made this book so much more than I thought it could be.

The future isn’t a warning my friend, it’s a promise, and it won’t be broken by us. That’s the nature of the trap we’re caught in.
Evidently, Rashton made quite an impression last night, because my passage through the house is punctuated by hearty handshakes and backslaps. Greetings lie scattered in my wake like tossed rocks, their goodwill bringing me out in bruises.
Too little information and you're blind, too much and you're blinded.
This time the past will hold her hand and squeeze. Memory will murder her.
