Call Me by Your Name is the story of a sudden and powerful romance that blossoms between an adolescent boy and a summer guest at his parents' house, a cliff-side mansion on the Italian Riviera. Unprepared for the consequences of their attraction, at first each feigns indifference to the other. But during the warm, languorous summer weeks that follow, unrelenting buried currents of obsession and fear, fascination and desire, intensify their passion as they test the charged ground between them. What grows from the depths of their spirits is a romance of scarcely six weeks duration and an experience that marks them for a lifetime. For what the two discover on the Riviera and on a sultry evening in Rome is the one thing both already fear they may never truly find again: total intimacy.… (mer)

I don't know how to start this review.

I hated this book. I hated it because I loved it. Because it's perfect. Because it's more than perfect. Because tears are welling up in my eyes as I think about the past two/three hours I spent curled up on the living room sofa with my eyes never leaving their spot on the page, at times spending entire minutes gasping silently, at times putting the book down and whispering "wow" to myself, at times (and this one happened the most, I fear, so many embarrassing times) whimpering and almost beginning to sob.

I can't deal with this book. I can't. It's love in the most perfect way. Love in the way I wish I could one day be able to experience it. It's when one person knows another so well that they can become them. I don't know if that makes sense. In fact, it doesn't make sense, even to me, even to Oliver and Elio, even to anyone in this world. That's what I got from this book: Search for meaning, and don't end up finding it. That's life.

I visited Italy last summer, but the way Aciman conjures it is so perfect, even more perfect, more real than the way it was when I was there. It's almost as if he experienced what I experienced but actually poured all of his talent and work to transcribe it into one small section (Part 3) of this amazing, mindblowing novel.

I can honestly say that this is one of my favorite books. I don't want to say "my favorite book" because then I end up ruining everything and sounding like the ten-year-old who had just read the fifth Harry Potter. Which is who I am. Because I just finished this book and, like Staordinario-fantastico, I just don't know how I'm going to sleep tonight.

I think I'm going to watch some TV. That should carve out some of the emotion that had just bloomed inside my body.

I loved the movie aesthetic that nostalgic feeling, so I thought the book must be better right? Wrong, it was not just "better" it was amazingly better, the movie cannot hold a candle to this masterpiece. This books is a short one but a beautiful none less. For me it was hard to read it in one go, the feelings overflowed, I felt like Elio and his intensity blinded me.
This book is a bittersweet dream.
I loved it. ( )

I think this is a beautiful book about love, coming of age, and finding yourself. I think the movie was a really true and honest adaptation. I do not, however, think it’s an anomaly of the genre.

Call Me By Your Name centers on Elio, a 17-year-old who falls for a graduate student that has come to stay with Elio’s family in Italy for the summer. It is a true exploration and discovery for Elio and the relationship that blooms between the two is beautiful and poignant. The writing is poetic and endearing. I truly felt all of Elio’s hesitance and emotion on each page. I think this book bridges a gap in young adult and adult literature. Elio is still young enough to be a YA character, but his relationship is so much more intense and mature, that I think this book can satisfy both audiences.

I enjoyed this book and it has earned a lot of its praise, but I hope that the worldwide enjoyment of this story pushes more readers to pick up other LGBTQ+ novels. Love is such a universal desire, I feel most of us could be limiting ourselves by gravitating towards stories that echo only our own experiences. ( )

This was a very well-written book; I appreciated that. The connection between the two main characters was stressed throughout the book, and it was interesting to see it develop over time. The characters struggled with acknowledging their homosexuality or bisexuality, particularly in the climate of the 1980s. This aspect of the book affected me, since that is something I never had to deal with as a heterosexual. I found the book a bit on the sexually graphic side for my tastes. I stepped back and thought if this opinion was coming from a place of prejudice since I am not part of the LGBTQ community, and concluded that it really was more graphic than I usually like. ( )

Needless to say, this was an intense read. I think I'll shelve it right next to Lolita, personally. Full review on my blog www.coffeeandtrainspotting.wordpress.com ( )

In poetic, elevated prose, André Aciman has written a powerful psychological drama of two bisexual men who share their most intimate selves, intellectually, spiritually, and physically. Elio’s thoughts and emotions are depicted in vivid detail that unashamedly highlights the infatuation, lust, love, and obsession that sometimes results from a first love.

Perhaps we were friends first and lovers second.
But then perhaps this is what lovers are.
