This is the second story in M.A. Church’s ‘Deep Blue Sea’ series about merfolk who have their own culture, behaviors that are decidedly nonhuman, and consider humans as somewhat odd, if not plain weird. I was thrilled to see this is Marcus’s story – he had a secondary role to play in the first book and with as fierce a warrior as he is and as opposed as he is to almost anything human in his personal life, I couldn’t wait to see what happens once he finds himself mated to a “land crawler” (my word, not his). Marcus is the picture of a fierce, growly warrior, almost like a werewolf. But he is a merman through and through, which means he barely tolerates humans. They are okay to have the occasional bit of fun with, but their attachment to dry land goes against everything Marcus loves. So when he finds out that his mate is a human, Marcus is not exactly overjoyed. He doesn’t want to tie himself down anyway, but with a human? Not what he wants. Not that he has a choice – the need to claim Blair and protect him is almost overpowering. Blair likes his nomadic lifestyle. He has the money to travel from an inheritance and selling a company he founded, he has seen a lot of the world – including some very strange things, and he prefers adventure to settling down. So when he sees a merman and the creature starts to talk to him, he is surprised, but not shocked. It all sounds rather interesting. But when he finds out he is supposed to be Marcus’s mate, Blair panics and runs. Marcus feels rejected, Blair is unhappy but has no idea how to apologize, and Kannan and Nisha have their hands full trying to clear up the misunderstandings, fight the mutual fear, and deal with the fallout. At least they understand the issues, having gone through a rather rocky initial phase as well. I loved their antics and was grateful they were there for Marcus and Blair. Those guys needed all the help they could get! If you like the merfolk of the ‘Deep Blue Sea’ world, if you’re interested to find out more about two men who come from different cultures and have diametrically opposed expectations, and if you’re looking for an entertaining, sometimes suspenseful, read about some of the pitfalls of cross-cultural love, then you will probably like this fun novella.
