Day breaks over the town. Get up, everybody! It's time to go to school. For the old man too, it's time to wake up. The night was icy and he's hungry. His name? He doesn't know . . . This is the story of a person with no job, no family, no home--a nobody, who can't even remember what he was once named. But his day changes when he is noticed by a child. Drawn in soft, watercolor pencil, this is an important story for our times. This gentle, compelling book will appeal to a child's sense of justice and to every reader's compassion.… (mer)

A sad-happy story about a man who's homeless, until...... A little girl sees him and gives him a sandwich. She says that hes like a Teddy. I would recommend this for people who don't fully understand what 'Homeless' means. ( )

Simple and gorgeous, the overall effect of the book brought me to tears. I found it brought to light some issues often left ignored, namely homelessness. We generally don’t talk to children about such things, but this book provides an opportunity to introduce children to the reality of life around us and provides us with encouragement to see. ( )

A touching and bittersweet story. Stunning illustrations and amazing detail and expressiveness. An important and serious topic to portray, yet continuously shows this version of homelessness. This is the stereotypical image of what homeless person is and it's so much more than this. Women, children and families are more and more finding themselves without housing. I would like more about that version. It is still a beautiful story and takes a look at identity, kindness. ( )

I was wary about this book at first with it being about a young girl obsessed with a homeless man, but my daughter loved it. The illustrations are VERY much like James Stevenson, whom we LOVE in this household. Both my kids were fascinated by the book the first time they heard it, but my daughter had me re-read it a few times. She hasn't gone out and friended any homeless people, but the book did start a few discussions. So, I didn't mark it down for being controversial. ( )

Sweet story about the inherent kindness in children, proving that they can lead us to be more a empathetic society. The meaning of this book encourages one to be more active in making a change: the simplest gesture can change another's outlook. The watercolor illustrations are beautifully simple. ( )
