They died with smiles on their faces. Three apparent suicides: a brilliant engineer, an infamous lawyer, and a controversial politician. Three strangers with nothing in common - and no obvious reasons for killing themselves. Police lieutenant Eve Dallas found the deaths suspicious. And her instincts paid off when autopsies revealed small burns on the brains of the victims. Was it a genetic abnormality or a high-tech method of murder? Eve's investigation turned to the provocative world of virtual reality games - where the same techniques used to create joy and desire could also prompt the mind to become the weapon of its own destruction . . .… (mer)

In all long series, some books are just stronger than others. I couldn't get into this one for some reason. Worse, I sort thought Eve was a bit slow. Still, sort of nice to see her relationship with Peabody at and earlier stage and loved the Mavis storyline. All in all, not her best effort ( )

The fourth book of the popular “In Death” series by J.D. Robb starts at the end of Eve and Roarke's honeymoon at the Roarke-owned Olympus One resort. When an engineer is discovered dead in his room by his roommate, Eve is asked to check into it as a favor. It appears to be self termination and Eve and Roarke head back to New York to start life as newlyweds. On her first day back to work Eve has to testify at a trial. The next day the defendant's lawyer is discovered dead and it's also ruled a self termination. When a controversial politician kills himself Eve thinks it's just too coincidental. Why are all these brilliant people with great futures and no history of depression killing themselves? Soon Eve is thrown into the world of virtual reality and mind control, where your own mind can become someone else's weapon. Eve is determined to find the murderer responsible for these deaths, but the closer she comes to the truth, the more danger she, and Roarke, are in.

This is a great series when you just want to be entertained by a blend of romance and Eve's kick butt personality. I'll continue to read the series because I enjoy the characters, especially Peabody, even when some of the situations they find themselves in seen a bit implausible. The books hit all the right buttons for those who love strong women with inner vulnerabilities in the not so distant future. Just sit back, enjoy the fun and don't expect to be challenged by difficult mystery elements. I'm a fan and am moving on to #5, Ceremony in Death.

Often I start reading a book that just doesn't interest me. When I hit a string of these, I use J.D. Robb to break the string. Her futuristic adventures of Eve Dallas - NY cop in the year 2525, never disappoints. It's like a guilty pleasure for me. This one was no different. Four prominent people commit suicide. None of them seem the type and Eve thinks that maybe the suicides are really murders. ( )

NYPSD homicide detective Lieutenant Eve Dallas finds the apparent suicides of an engineer, a lawyer, and a politician . . . who appear to have nothing in common . . . suspicious. But strange, small burns on the brains of each victim seem to indicate a commonality and lead Eve to investigate virtual-reality games. Will she find the answer before more victims forfeit their own lives?

In this, the fourth book in the “In Death’ series, as Eve investigates, the clever plot slowly unfolds with unexpected revelations that keep the suspense building and the tightly-woven story moving forward. The expected dynamic between the characters continues, with each becoming a bit more complex as illuminating backstories add layers to each individual. The futuristic world, delightfully filled with new discoveries for readers, adds to the enjoyment of this unputdownable tale. Don’t miss this one.

Highly recommended. ( )

How is it that three women die under very similar circumstances? All were apparently very happy when they died, but all three deaths were ruled suicides. Why the conflict? Also, the three women were all professional, one a brilliant engineer, then a successful lawyer and a controversial politician. They had nothing in common but the cause of their deaths.

Seemingly, only lieutenant Eve Dallas finds these deaths suspicious. She further investigates and she finds a common denominator. As always the danger is in this story is in stiff competition to the sizzling connection between Eve and Roarke.

This futuristic story, Rapture in Death, is a bit more advanced in that regard than the prior three books in this series. This is especially so because Eve and Roarke happen upon a deadly virtual reality game. They could lose everything. Will Eve be able to get to the bottom of things before that very game becomes deadly to her?

The In Death series is a long-running one, with 49 books offered thus far. As each title gives a brief history of the pasts of Eve and Roarke, and how they found one another. However, it is a very exciting series and might just definitely be enjoyed more by reading in succession.

I plan on reading and reviewing each title on this blog. Feel free to search any of my previous reviews. ( )
