Wall Street Journal and New York Times bestselling author Robert Dugoni's coming-of-age story is, according to Booklist, "a novel that, if it doesn't cross entirely over into John Irving territory, certainly nestles in close to the border." Sam Hill always saw the world through different eyes. Born with red pupils, he was called "Devil Boy" or Sam "Hell" by his classmates; "God's will" is what his mother called his ocular albinism. Her words were of little comfort, but Sam persevered, buoyed by his mother's devout faith, his father's practical wisdom, and his two other misfit friends. Sam believed it was God who sent Ernie Cantwell, the only African American kid in his class, to be the friend he so desperately needed. And that it was God's idea for Mickie Kennedy to storm into Our Lady of Mercy like a tornado, uprooting every rule Sam had been taught about boys and girls. Forty years later, Sam, a small-town eye doctor, is no longer certain anything was by design--especially not the tragedy that caused him to turn his back on his friends, his hometown, and the life he'd always known. Running from the pain, eyes closed, served little purpose. Now, as he looks back on his life, Sam embarks on a journey that will take him halfway around the world. This time, his eyes are wide open--bringing into clear view what changed him, defined him, and made him so afraid, until he can finally see what truly matters.… (mer)

Sam Hill is born with red eyes: a genetic abnormality known as ocular albinism. He is ostracized by many, and derisively called "Devil Boy." However, he is loved deeply by his parents, and his mother forces him into the local Catholic school, where he is bullied by an older boy and not protected by the nun, who is principal there. Luckily, the parish priest sees through the treachery and Sam is fortunate to become lifelong friends with Ernie, a standout football player, the only black student in the parochial school. In high school, they are joined by Mickie (Michaela), who is also from the land of the misbegotten. Sam's life is forever changed, including forsaking his admission to Stanford, where he would have roomed with Ernie, because tragedy strikes. His moral core is mostly solid and sacrifices many, as he navigates his life, eventually finding his destiny. ( )

This is one of those that caught my attention because of the very high ratings. I'd never heard of the author before, probably because I don't read many thrillers which seem to be his thing, but it was a really solid read. Good writing, good dialog, sympathetic characters. I hope he writes more like this coming of age story. ( )

Wonderful story of a man’s life, fraught with bullying early in life and how this made him a stronger, more resilient person. Filled with laughter, sadness and ultimately an uplifting story, highly recommended as a fulfilling and enjoyable reading experience. ( )

Samuel Hill or Sam Hell as some of his friends called him has ocular albinism (his irises are red or very pink). The book is written with Sam looking back on his life. His mother believes his red eyes are "God's will" which makes him extraordinary. She wants him to attend Our Lady of Mercy elementary school but the head mistress and the board think that he would be a disruption. His father runs a pharmacy and is a gentle man. His mother believes everything is "God's will" and prays everyday to the Virgin Mother. Sam is not so sure. However, he does believe that God sent Ernie Cantwell, the only African American student at the school, to be his friend. He is also befriended by Mickie Kennedy, who takes the school by storm. She is very opinionated and blunt. While at OLM he is discriminated against and bullied by David Bateman. Forty years later he has become a small-town eye doctor in practice with Michaela Kennedy and takes care of his mother and father as he has since he was 18 years old. Unfortunately, a mother brings in her daughter, Daniela, who has a detached retina due to a blow to the head. He suspects child abuse. However, while waiting for the hearing, David Bateman kills his divorced wife and then himself. Sam suffers much guilt and trauma and leaves Burlingame, California, to work with a group of traveling eye doctors who treat the unfortunate around the world. ( )
