Wow. That was a ride. I was surprised to realise halfway through that this is by the author of EVERY HEART A DOORWAY. I think at points it tried to be too grand with too many quotations from other literary works used that bloated it a bit, especially at the beginning when everything was confusing. But I'm glad I stuck with it because the storyline was one quite fascinating and I rooted so hard for Roger and Dodger. There were a couple of instances I felt that more emotions could have been used,

“Middlegame” by Seanan McGuire
“Craft herpes can strike anyone at any time,” she says dryly. “Practice safe crafts,” says Smita.”
This book follows the story of two children, Roger and Dodger, who were created in a secret laboratory with the goal of becoming the ultimate alchemical power. The two are separated at a young age, but as they grow older, they find that they have a strange, unexplainable connection to each other.
What I loved most about this book was the complexity of the world-building and the depth of the characters. McGuire has created a fascinating world of alchemy, magic, and time travel, and she doesn't shy away from exploring the darker aspects of these concepts. The characters are multi-dimensional and flawed, making them feel very real and relatable.
My only complaint is that at times the plot felt a bit convoluted and hard to follow at times. However, overall, I would recommend this one to anyone who loves fantasy and science fiction.
Also, I listened to the audio book and Amber Benson does a fantastic job on the narration! (
