"Morning Glory Monday" is about a young girl who has a friend named Jackie. Jackie and her were neighbors. One day the young girl and her papa began to notice how homesick her mother had become. He mom was from Italy, and they lived in New York, so they knew they would have to come up with a creative idea to make her smile and be cheerful. So, one day they went to an amusement park where the young girl won a packet of seeds. Although the amusement park didn't cheer up her mother, she was sure beautiful flowers would. And so, she planted the flowers and as they began to grow her mother began to perk up. The flowers grew more and more and eventually covered a majority of the city giving to cheer to many different people. The story closes by saying that the young girl grew up married her friend Jackie and owned a flower shop to continue spreading cheer. ( )

Based on a true story, this is a good example of historical fiction because it addresses difficulties of life in 1930's New York tenements and how a little girl could help her mother find happiness in the littlest things: flowers. Historical facts, such as the poverty, immigrants, and tenements in New York in the 1930's are combined with the imagination, such as this little girl and her need to cheer up her family. It is a story with historical influence. In the beginning, the plot proposes a problem: no one is very happy in the lower east side of New York because it is hot and not a very pleasant place to live. The little girl's mother is very sad and she and her father want to cheer her up, so they go to Coney Island. The little girl wins some Morning Glory seeds, plants them, sings to them, and waits. When they start to sprout, it cheers up the mother. They continue to grow, spreading all over the neighborhood, and the flowers cheer up everyone and their lives are so much better.
