From the author of The Bride Test comes a romance novel hailed as one of The Washington Post's 50 Notable Works of Fiction in 2018 and one of Amazon's Top 100 Books of 2018! "This is such a fun read and it's also quite original and sexy and sensitive."--Roxane Gay, New York Times bestselling author "Hoang's writing bursts from the page."--Buzzfeed A heartwarming and refreshing debut novel that proves one thing: there's not enough data in the world to predict what will make your heart tick. Stella Lane thinks math is the only thing that unites the universe. She comes up with algorithms to predict customer purchases--a job that has given her more money than she knows what to do with, and way less experience in the dating department than the average thirty-year-old. It doesn't help that Stella has Asperger's and French kissing reminds her of a shark getting its teeth cleaned by pilot fish. Her conclusion: she needs lots of practice--with a professional. Which is why she hires escort Michael Phan. The Vietnamese and Swedish stunner can't afford to turn down Stella's offer, and agrees to help her check off all the boxes on her lesson plan--from foreplay to more-than-missionary position... Before long, Stella not only learns to appreciate his kisses, but crave all of the other things he's making her feel. Their no-nonsense partnership starts making a strange kind of sense. And the pattern that emerges will convince Stella that love is the best kind of logic...… (mer)

I liked the voice of Stella - it was fresh and interesting. Very much a romance novel, though the characters had depth. ( )

I loved this book. And I was fascinated with how similar Stella is to me! (hoping I don't have autism, lol)

I loved the main heroes so much that after finishing the book I immediately got to looking for the next book in this series. Unfortunately, it's not about them.

It was interesting to learn more about the lives of people who suffer from Asperger's syndrome, especially considering that the author herself is autistic, thus knows a lot about living with it.

Some readers complain about numerous cliches in the novel. Yes, some things were quite predictable, but it didn't prevent me from enjoying this book a lot. ( )

I read this maybe a year ago but see that I haven't entered it, but it was memorable! I have no problem recalling the plot and the characters and how sweet it was - which is a big tick in its favour. ( )

As I was reading this novel, I thought for sure I was going to give this book 5-stars and keep it forever. Well, I am keeping it (I'm HFN), but I had to take off a star for some unhealthy content.

Towards the end, there was some sketchy possessive behaviour that made me take pause. When he was trying to fight for her, instead of being excited that he was going to get her back, I was thinking "I would admonish him if he did that within a relationship, but run for the hills if that was his behaviour when trying to get me." Michael's punching Philip, in and of itself, did not bother me. It's not the healthiest behaviour, but what makes our relationships healthy is keeping unhealthy to a minimum (not eliminate) and sustained efforts to do well. It's not behaviour I'd encourage, but if he had said "a woman leaning away from you is not an invitation to come further in," I would understand and partially enjoy being defended. Instead he was possessive, especially at a time when he has no claim to her. Big red flag.

I realize, due to heritage, he is part of a sub-culture that has some differing rules. However, she isn't and the relationship is about both of them. At least she stood up for herself, somewhat. Not enough. He just got creepier. Just acknowledging the bad behaviour in stories does not fix the problem. I did think it was at the level of forgivable, but only with a commitment to stop.

When I finished the book, I looked at some reviews and realized they were right: there were actually small signs all along. I didn't notice them because the behaviour he did in the beginning can actually be a good part of a healthy relationship. However, once the new signs are added, they show a different motivation to the earlier actions - an unhealthy motivation. There was a little unhealthiness all along.

The big thing is that it is actually not enough to make me dislike the book? It was such a strong start with a unique perspective. Hoang has a great way of explaining what Stella’s experience with Asperger’s is like, giving it a really universal quality (take this and dial it to a hundred) to make it understandable and relatable. She makes me “get” it, so much that I actually searched to find a list of when to speak with your doctor - maybe this explains my weirdness! Nope. Just good writing.

The first 80 pages read like a slow-burn, vanilla erotica (the book is NSFW). How can only getting to second base be so sexy? There's so much I liked about the book and the two main characters. There is a gentleness to both of them. You do root for their HEA. The end was a fairly large stretch of the suspension of disbelief (insta-success for his business) but the rest was grounded well.

I'm going through a really rough time, and I found this book engaged me so much that I could escape from reality for a while. I experienced positive excitement (eustress), happiness and affection through them. Really, what more do you want from a romance?

Despite its issues, I am not passing on the book so I can keep it myself. I may make a different decision if I reread it, seeing what I do now, but that's a decision for next time. ( )
