Wonderful Audiobook. Great storytelling. Full cast. Great for teens and adults. Open ending is something I struggle with but otherwise would have been 5 stars. ( )

I love true crime podcasts and I love a good mystery novel. With this audiobook, I got both. It tells the story of 19-yo Sadie, who leaves the trailer park she lives, and the woman who took care of her and her little sister after their drug-addicted mother abandoned them. The reason why Sadie is leaving: she wants to find the murderer of her 13-yo sister Mattie who went missing and was then found dead.

And then Sadie goes missing too. Meanwhile, a true-crime podcaster wants to find out what happened. To Mattie. And to Sadie. We learn their stories through alternating chapters - from Sadie's point of view, and by "listening" to the podcast.

First off - what a great concept! I've heard before that this book is PERFECT to check out in audio form, and I highly agree! It is narrated by a full cast - each character has their individual voice - and there's also music and sound effects. Almost like a radio play. Now I'm not the biggest fan of a book that was turned into a play. That's why I was skeptical at first. But this is not a play. This is the full text of the book. Just that there's not a single narrator, but a whole bunch of it, along with realistic background sound here and there (not all the time). Such as street noise, people in a restaurant, etc. Subtle, but very well done, and it gives that audiobook a very very real touch. Which makes the story even more gripping, realistic, and haunting.

Also, this is NOT a feel-good book. We're talking about child abuse, child neglect, and violence here. It's heartbreaking... and by no means just fiction. Yes, it is a fictional story. But one that might as well happen in one way or the other each and every day. And with predators hiding in plain sight.

I loved the way the author wrote the story. We hear in Sadie's words what's happening to her, but she does not always give us the full picture. It's the podcast parts that fill some of the missing parts.

The ending is... probably polarizing. I've read some reviewers who strongly disliked the ending. Some thought it screams "sequel". Nope. Not for me. It's good as it is. Please leave it at that!

I could not stop listening! It made me sad. It made me think. In the end, it left me hopeful.

4.5 stars. This was a quick read that was sad yet suspenseful. I think it also made me a little angry at the end, not at the book, but how close to the truth it can be. ( )

teen/adult fiction (suspense/gritty crime drama podcast with incidentally supporting LGB characters)

warning: child sexual abuse triggers, assault triggers

also contains: violence, language, underage drinking and drug-addicted absent mother ( )

This book brings the reader into the lives of a torn down family. It’s vivid language haunts the words of the podcast that is trying to find the true story of Sadie and her sister. This thriller pulls the heartstrings in a must read for someone looking for a realistic portrayal of the horrors of a young survivor of rape struggling to find vengeance. In short, it is really good and no amount of words can give it justice. ( )
