It was a very typical early Regency style. A Rake is brought to his knees by a virtuous beautiful widow sums of the plot. However, even in this book, Balogh adds some lovely touches, e.g., a lovely back story for the protagonist that gives some explanation for why he is a rake, which humanizes him. Jack, Marquess of Kendall, is a rake opposed to marriage. In a drunken evening, he bets that he can seduce Diana, the virtuous widow of his distant cousin's brother. The rest of the book is about his pursuit of lust, and Diana's refusal to give into lust without love and marriage. Jack reveals that his aversion to marriage is due to watching his father's infidelities break his mother's heart and wound his sisters. Diana realizes that Jack has more depth than his rakish facade. My least favorite book of this author. She does characters so well, but I just wasn't convinced of what each saw in the other to make them fall in love. Her later book about a rake pursuing a lady was done much more convincingly. inga recensioner | lägg till en recension

It's a fine read, nothing exciting with interesting but a little dull characters. Certainly, it's not one of my favorites of her books, but still a good read. ( )
