Thou Shalt Innovate profiles wondrous Israeli innovations that are collectively changing the lives of billions of people around the world and explores why Israeli innovators of all faiths feel a compulsion to make the world better. Featured stories include Israeli ingenuity in agriculture, medicine, water, and defense, but the heart and soul of this book revolves around the global impact of world changing innovations and the people behind them. It is the collective story of how Israelis are helping to feed the hungry, cure the sick and provide shelter for the homeless. Israel is playing disproportionate role in helping solve some of the world's biggest challenges by tapping into the nation's soul: the spirit of tikkun olam - the Jewish concept of repairing the world. There is no single narrative that fully describes the State of Israel. But there is also no denying that Israel has extraordinary innovators who are bound together not by religion, money or stature, but rather by their desire to save lives and find higher purpose. Thou Shalt Innovate is the story of Israelis who exude light in the face of the darkness, about people who have chosen hope and healing over death and destruction. These stories are rays of light coming from an otherwise depressing part of the world. It is the 'innovation soup for the soul'.… (mer)

An interesting read with several stories I had not heard before, from a perspective not often seen in histories/cultural histories of science and technology. As one might expect from such a work, I have serious doubts that the material presented is entirely accurate or without bias. Nonetheless it is a very interesting read. ( )

Author Avi Jorisch suggests Innovation is the absolute calling of modern day Israel. Many have written about Israel’s success in innovative problem-solving technologies this book is more unique in that this book looks primarily on Israeli innovations that improve the quality of and save lives aroundd our world. The inventions Mr. Jorisch describes are sometimes nothing short of modern miracles coming from the genius of exceptional, and sometimes different individuals. Many of the inventors Mr.Jorisch speaks of received nothing but rejection for their often off the shelf ideas. Others suffered many failures before their ideas were changed into a successful businesses that solved world wide problems. The dozen plus stories are the key to Mr. Jorisch’s writing of his book. He carefully explains the issues behind the technology being developed while not losing site of the human element and the invention’s impact on the the world. ( )

Very readable in short chapters that cover a range of innovations. Some of the things invented by Israelis are household names like Iron Dome, PillCam, drip irrigation, Check Point firewall software, etc. Others are more obscure, but no less earth-shaking in their impact on society (not just Israelis) such as the Emergency Bandage that may have saved Rep. Gabrielle Giffords's life, or United Hatzalah (the so-called Uber of ambulances), or the Grain Cocoon which I'd never heard of. In all, a great little read about how the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob have been a blessing to all mankind, just as God promised. (I was given a complimentary e-copy of this book as part of the LT Early Reviewers program and neither my review nor rating of this book were influenced by this.) ( )

Absolutely excellent. I recommend that anyone who uses any technology read this book and appreciate the work of all the people who made this world a better place to live. ( )
