"Paula Brackston is the New York Times bestselling author of The Witch's Daughter, The Winter Witch, The Midnight Witch, The Silver Witch, and The Return of the Witch. She has a master's degree in creative writing from Lancaster University in the UK. She lives in Wales with her family."-- "A new series about a young woman whose connection to antiques takes her on a magical adventure. New York Times bestselling author of The Witch's Daughter Paula Brackston returns to her trademark blend of magic and romance to launch a new series guaranteed to enchant her audience even more. Xanthe and her mother Flora leave London behind for a fresh start, taking over an antique shop in the historic town of Marlborough. Xanthe has always had an affinity with some of the antiques she finds. When she touches them, she can sense something of the past they come from and the stories they hold. So when she has an intense connection to a beautiful silver chatelaine she has to know more. It's while she's examining the chatelaine that she's transported back to the seventeenth century. And shortly after, she's confronted by a ghost who reveals that this is where the antique has its origins. The ghost tasks Xanthe with putting right the injustice in its story to save an innocent girl's life, or else it'll cost her Flora's. While Xanthe fights to save her amid the turbulent days of 1605, she meets architect Samuel Appleby. He may be the person who can help her succeed. He may also be the reason she can't bring herself to leave. With its rich historical detail, strong mother-daughter relationship, and picturesque English village, The Little Shop of Found Things is poised to be a strong start to this new series."--… (mer)

The Little Shop of Found Things by Paula Brackston was a fun read involving time travel, romance, ghosts and antiques. Mother and daughter, Flora and Xanthe Westlake move to the market town of Marlborough in Wiltshire and plan to open an antique store. Although Flora is the lover of antiques and Xanthe prefers singing for a living, it is Xanthe that some pieces sing to and draw her into their story.

One particular piece that they acquire speaks loudly to Xanthe and it, as well as a very forceful ghost directs her to time travel to the 1600s in order to help a young girl who has been accused of theft and is in danger of being hung. The ghost is the mother of this young girl and she threatens to harm Flora unless Xanthe can get her daughter proven innocent and freed. Xanthe must figure out what happened and how it can be fixed. She is aided in the present by the handsome Liam and in the past by the dark and brooding Samuel.

The Little Shop of Found Things is the first of a trilogy so I am expecting that Xanthe will be doing more time travel in the next books. And although Liam seems very interested in her, it is obvious that she is drawn to the 17th century and Samuel. I am looking forward to continuing on with the trilogy and finding out what happens. The Little Shop of Found Things by Paula Brackston

Xanthe and her mom have just bought an antique shop in Marlborough and very strange place...perfect for both to rebuild their lives. Xanthe has a special talent. She can hear some objects "speak" to her and is able to hear their story and even help put some restless ghosts at peace in the process. The home & shop they bought has is own resident ghost as Xanthe is soon to uncover and the ghost threatens to hurt Xanthe's mom if she doesn't help her.

Story was a little tedious in the middle, I wished we had a name to the dude that nicked Xanthes car so maybe that way he could be the bad guy instead of a small plot device to link Liam to her. I also feel that Alice should’ve been blackmailed or was a scapegoat of someone else who stole the items but nope that didn’t happen.

Other then that I do feel bad for Samuel, he was a decent fellow and I liked him a lot, more so than Liam, (it would be interesting to see if Liam is his descendant tho) and I do like the 17 century songs being introduced to us (American here) and the history was well interesting. It was also fun seeing the characters dialogue go from 17th century to modern day English as well, just proves how language evolved from the years. ( )

I loved this novel! The story is a masterful blend of a loving mother-daughter relationship, a mother and daughter each beginning anew for different reasons, a woman's determination that arthritis will not stop making a new dream come true, historical fiction, time travel, friendship, a ghost, a magical antique item, the healing power of music, and a sprinkle of romantic stardust.

Xanthe Westlake and her mother, Flora, have moved to Marlborough for a new beginning and to make a new dream come true. Together they will open an antique shop that has been vacant for months after the death of the former shop owner. Although the shop is filled with collectibles, they also attend an auction at the Great Chalfield Manor. Xanthe would never have imagined it would be the beginning of an adventure far beyond her imagination.

At the novel's end, book clubs will appreciate St. Martin's Press Reading Group Gold of Behind the Novel (a) Time and Place and (b) Finding Things and Discussion Questions. I started this on audio, and I thought the reader, Marisa Calin, was good. I had to switch to print because I ran out of time with the digital loan, but I wouldn’t mind doing future books in the series on audio.

The blurb for this recommended it for Outlander fans, which hooked me despite being burned before by such recommendations. Outlander and Hunger Games, man. Don’t believe the blurbs, self!

I might still recommend it to library patrons who liked Outlander, but I wouldn’t push too hard with the comparison. It’s got time travel, it’s got a little romance, but it’s much lighter and less developed (to be fair, much as I love the series, Gabaldon takes a million years to develop things, which can also be vexing) than the Gabaldon series. I don’t necessarily mind when plots move along quickly, but a couple of things—Xanthe jumping to conclusions and being right about them with the time travel and Alice; and things progressing with Samuel from “you’re strange and interesting” to “my love, my life was nothing before you entered it”—were a bit too speedy for me.

I liked it enough that I’ll probably read the next, but not because I was super sold on the romance. The thing I liked most about it was the small town setting of Marlborough and the characters Xanthe and Flora meet when they move there to open their shop.

And where shall I look for thee, When I no longer hear that voice so dear? Where shall I seek the warmth that love Made all things found glow bright and clear? Look not to the heavenly stars, Nor search the lofty spires, nor bid the choir sing. I will dwell among the details of our lives; My memory will linger in all the found things.

It is a commonly held belief that the most likely place to find a ghost is beneath a shadowy moon, among the ruins of a castle, or perhaps in an abandoned house where the living have fled leaving only spirits to drift from room to room.
