A demon is intent on devouring the world - and it's up to a small group of believers in San Francisco to stop it. A desperate and terrified old man appears at the office of John Hyatt at the San Francisco Department of Sanitation with a chilling complaint. His house, Seymour Willis insists, is breathing. Hyatt suspects a rat infestation but the truth is worse. Much worse. An ancient demon out of darkest Native American folklore lives within the walls and floorboards of Willis's home - an all-powerful malevolent being determined to break free and wreak havoc on the City by the Bay. Soon a tiny cadre of believers in the impossible - including Hyatt, Willis, and a Native American shaman - hold the fate of all humanity in their hands. The monster's hunger for blood and flesh is insatiable and it is determined to escape its prison and become whole. And once it does, the entire world will be its feeding ground. A haunted house story like no other - a gory and terrifying tale of demonic possession - this award-winning supernatural thriller by the acclaimed author of The Manitou provides substantial chills on every page. A tale of unrelenting terror reminiscent of the works of H. P. Lovecraft, Graham Masterton's Charnel House will haunt your dreams long after you've turned the final page.… (mer)

This is classic 1978 horror that is being re-released in June, though there is no cover on goodreads for the version I have... which can be seen here http://wellwortharead.blogspot.com/2016/05/charnel-house-by-graham-masterton.htm...
I do remember reading it decades ago. In fact it was one of the first horror novels I ever snuck off my mother's book case when she thought I was too young to read them.

When an elderly gentleman complains that his house is breathing, John doesn't really know what to make of it. The gentleman does not seem like a crack pot and yet who ever heard of a breathing house? John reluctantly agrees to stop by and have a listen to this breathing, if he has the time later on that evening. He and a friend do indeed hear something that sounds like breathing, and against the owner's wishes try to communicate with it. This proves to be a fatal error, because when they leave the house a part if this evil goes with them.

This was a classic good against evil story. 4 out of 5 stars from me ( )

Screaming Terror!

Backstory:

John Hyatt gets all kinds of clients walking through his door at the sanitation department in San Francisco, but when an elderly man (Seymour Willis) comes to see him complaining of hearing "breathing" in his house, John is thinking the man is a little looney. John tries to tell Seymour that he doesn't take care of breathing sounds, but the man is insistent to the point that John finally gives in.

When John and one of his co-workers (Dan) go to the house they finally realize that the man was not kidding - something was breathing as they could hear the sound to the point where it seemed the house was pulsing with it and then something happens to Dan which makes John wonder what is going on.

When John tries to find out more about what is in the house he realizes that he has stepped into something so evil that he could very well lose his soul as a demon lies in wait for the humans that have crossed the threshold into its lair!

Thoughts:

This book was awesome! The flow of the story just grabbed me from the get go and when I first started reading it I read a few chapters quickly as I just could not put it down. When things began to happen in the house is when the story broke wide open and I was just entranced with how quick I became involved in the storyline.

The pace became faster and I was turning pages quickly! This story with the demon became seeped with the occult themes and the story went into total overdrive. I would have read this book faster but I was reading it with some buddies so I slowed down to a crawl (lol) but I just loved this book as a haunted house theme with demons was one scary ride into the pits of hell! Giving this one five "Wicked Demon Scary" stars! ( )

This is only my second Masterton novel but man I am a huge fan now! This man is amazing at writing a fucked up story and I love it! ( )

I have a bunch of old Graham Masterton books put out by Tor and Leisure, but I never actually read any of them. I decided to start with Charnel House for no particular reason at all. The set-up is a good one though: In San Francisco, a man goes to the department of sanitation to complain that his house is breathing.

Before long, our hero John Hyatt is up to his neck in ancient Indian folklore and scary goings' on in a creepy old Victorian mansion.

The build-up in the first three chapters is nicely spooky and mysterious. Masterton gives enough detail to give the house character and make things creepy. I also enjoyed the portrayal of San Francisco in the '70's. The offhand way the main character brought his friend in the hospital a Playboy made me smile.

The book feels like two halves. And if the first half shows Graham Masterton's strengths, the second show his weakness. Once things start happening, they quickly come to feel ridiculous. Also, the characters feel shallow. Like they only exist to move the plot forward. From the writing, I believe Masterton knows his native American folklore. But the way the story is played out, the way the events were revealed felt pedestrian.

One quirk that I'm not sure is good or bad is Masterton's writing. His metaphors are often strange and I remember a couple of times a character is described as 'going bananas'. I know the book is narrated in the first person, but I have a feeling that these are quirks of the author, rather than the character.

Without having read any of his books, I'd always felt like Graham Masterton is likely a bog standard midlist eighties horror-boom author. I don't mean that as a slag. I happen to like midlist horror-boom books. I'd read more Masterton (I'd better! I do own several more), but I feel like Charnel House just lived up to my mediocre expectations rather than breaking them. ( )

Charnel House can be read as a companion book to The Manitou and I think that it is as good as its more famous cousin. They both have charismatic Indian Shamans and clueless anglos who make really weak jokes at the worst possible times. They are both steeped in Indian folklore and legends and emphasize how Western Culture has lost its mojo. They both are embarrassingly politically incorrect. They really both have almost the same plot, really. And they are both a blast to read.

Graham Masterton can really write a pulp novel and this one is a prime example. As long as the reader doesn’t take themselves or the story too seriously, Charnel House is a great time. Short, to the point, non-stop action, both humorous and horrific, and a really interesting and engaging (if simple) plot make this a great horror fix.

4 stars. ( )
