A Caldecott Honor Book An ALA Notable Book A breathtakingly beautiful and luminescent book that is pitch-perfect for anyone of any age who has experienced any type of loss or disappointment, from New York Times-bestselling picture book creator Brian Lies. New York Times-bestselling author-illustrator Brian Lies has created a beautiful, accessible, and deeply personal story about friendship, loss, and renewal. The Rough Patch was awarded a Caldecott Honor and features stunning paintings from the award-winning creator of Bats at the Beach. Evan and his dog do everything together, from eating ice cream to caring for their prize-winning garden, which grows big and beautiful. One day the unthinkable happens: Evan's dog dies. Heartbroken, Evan destroys the garden and everything in it. The ground becomes overgrown with prickly weeds and thorns, and Evan embraces the chaos. But beauty grows in the darkest of places, and when a twisting vine turns into an immense pumpkin, Evan is drawn out of his isolation and back to the county fair, where friendships--old and new--await. A deeply hopeful and positive book, The Rough Patch was awarded a Caldecott Honor and is a story about love, loss, and hope, and the healing power of friendship and nature. "Weepy and wonderful."--Wall Street Journal… (mer)

Evan and his dog did everything. When the dog dies, Evan becomes embittered as a result of his grief, withdrawing from society and neglecting things which formerly interested him. Then he allowed a pumpkin to grow, and Evan's life changes. Cute book, but the illustrations are not as endearing as I'd expect in a Caldecott honor book. ( )

A fox loses his best friend, his dog. He destroys the garden they worked in together because it reminds him of the dog. He only cultivates weeds and ugly plants, until a pumpkin vine creeps in. He grows a huge pumpkin and brings it to the fair. He feels a little better, and ends up going home with third prize and a puppy.
This is a sweet metaphor for feelings of grief. The fox never forgets his dog, or even gets over his death. As time passes, he remembers the things that he loved doing and begins to do them again. The pain subsides, little by little, and he is able to let a new dog into his life. ( )

The tagline says: "A good place won't stay empty for long. Something must grow." This is true for growing room for love after a loss. This is a lovely story for anyone who has lost a friend. This would be a good book to use with teaching about season changes or gardening. Beautiful Vignettes and full spreads alternate to add to the text. ( )

This book is a creative story about coping with death and dealing with change. In the story there is a fox named Evan who has dog that is his best friend. They did everything together and had a really close relationship. Evan loved his dog deeply. When Evan's dog dies, he does not know what to do. He goes through so many emotions and lashes out to deal with the pain. Throughout the story Evan does many things to get better and move on from the death of his dog. This book covers the deep topic of death, but in a kid friendly way. Kids of all ages could read this book and understand what happens and learn from the story. The story is told a lot though beautiful illustrations that represent Evan's emotions and stages of grief. This book is perfect for an art classroom because of the pictures that represent the story.
