Until she meets Greggori "Grey" Astor. Grey is immediately taken by the brilliant and stubborn Nedra, who he notices is especially invested in her studies. With her family's lifeâ??and the lives of all of Lunar Island's citizensâ??on the line, Nedra is determined to find a cure for the plague.
Grey and Nedra grow close, but as the sickness spreads and the body count rises, Nedra becomes desperate to find a cure. 3.75/4 stars.
Trigger Warnings: graphic violence; graphic surgery; animal cruelty, grief/loss.

Wow, the darkness factor certainly was dark.
Seeing the title and cover made me immediately pick this up, and the whole premise of a character giving in to the darkness, count me in.

For the first half of [b: Give the Dark My Love|37789836|Give the Dark My Love (Give the Dark My Love, #1)|Beth Revis|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1520001301l/37789836._SY75_.jpg|59446872], I was thinking of it as somewhat decent, a 3-star rating, just average. It was somewhat decent.
The magic system was interesting, the alchemy descriptions and school descriptions were so good.
It also has diversity in reference to sexuality.

The 2nd half bumped my rating up, the book got quite dark and eerie and I was here for it.
Like some of the places it went...
Towards the end, I was turning the pages to find out what happens. I also really was invested in the heroine's situation, wondering if she would succumb to the darkness or not.
Is it bad that I like when characters succumb to the darkness even at the same time, I'm literally shocked.

Overall, a great if somewhat dark book.

I liked this book! The other reviews are right - it's a slow burn of world building up until about the middle of the book, and then things go dark very quickly. Honestly, I was lead to believe things would be a little more dark and gruesome than they were, but I've been on such a horror movie/book kick lately that I'm sure I'm just a little desensitized. It was hard to read Nedra's story at points - I can't imagine feeling more and more helpless despite the gifts that she had with alchemy. Her character progression made so much sense, but it was heartbreaking nonetheless. And her relationship with Grey was sweet at times - he really did seem to care for her, but I understood his decisions and reactions to her, even if they hurt Nedra.

One of my only complaints with the book was that Grey was a narrator at all. I enjoyed the other glimpse of the world, especially through the eyes of someone who had the privilege in life that Nedra didn't. But there was definitely an unequal balance - there was a fairly long period of the book where we didn't hear from Grey at all, and to me it just seemed like the author couldn't figure out how to progress the plot along in any other way. There either needed to be more from him or nothing from him at all? But that's just my personal opinion, and it really doesn't affect how great this book is. ( )

How far will you go to keep your family, to save your people, to stop a plague?

This book didn't really do it for me, but wow was it creepy. The plague, and all of its gory ramifications, was frankly terrifying.

Beyond this, I found it hard to immerse myself in the narrative. Our narrators Ned and Grey were not particularly endearing, even to each other. Which is a shame, as Grey had some pretty solid quotes.
Exhibit A: "She was true. And that made her beautiful."

Unfortunately, the few intense scenes did not make up for the general tedium. ( )

I should have taken other reviewers seriously when they said that it gets darker in the second half. Don't read that lightly - it gets really freaking dark in the second half. I switched to the audiobook halfway through and found myself experiencing some truly disturbing lunch breaks and commutes.

I read this book because the author did an event at my bookstore and she was hilarious. The book is not like that, lol. By the end, the animal torture and graphic surgical procedures of the early chapters seem tame.

I really enjoyed the premise -- alchemy school! Cool! -- but the school wasn't really that fleshed out; the focus was on the plague and the characters. The plague was fascinating, especially once Nedra discovers its origin. The romance, however, didn't interest me. (They usually don't, though.) Grey was a very boring character, and most of his chapters could probably be removed entirely without having any noticeable effect on the story.

Nedra's consistency as a character really seemed to get lost near the end of the book. It's understandable that she would experience a major upheaval from all the horrific things that happen to her and her family, so it's not the fact that she changed so much that bothered me - it's the fact that she wavers back and forth between something resembling a traumatized version of herself, and some strange, cruel, unrecognizable other person. Basically everything related to her with "her" revenants and "her" island kind of lost me. She got power-trippy and I was not here for it.

The final plot twist was pretty predictable, but it was still well-written and enjoyable to see it play out.

I highly recommend the audiobook. When I found myself unable to push through in the middle of the book, switching over to hearing the two main characters in their own voices was a big help. ( )
