A lightning strike gave her a super power...but even a super genius can't solve the problem of middle school. This smart and funny novel is perfect for fans of The Fourteenth Goldfish, Rain Reign, and Counting by Sevens. Lucy Callahan was struck by lightning. She doesn't remember it, but it changed her life forever. The zap gave her genius-level math skills, and ever since, Lucy has been homeschooled. Now, at 12 years old, she's technically ready for college. She just has to pass 1 more test--middle school! Lucy's grandma insists: Go to middle school for 1 year. Make 1 friend. Join 1 activity. And read 1 book (that's not a math textbook!). Lucy's not sure what a girl who does calculus homework for fun can possibly learn in 7th grade. She has everything she needs at home, where nobody can make fun of her rigid routines or her superpowered brain. The equation of Lucy's life has already been solved. Unless there's been a miscalculation? A celebration of friendship, Stacy McAnulty's smart and thoughtful middle-grade debut reminds us all to get out of our comfort zones and embrace what makes us different. Still on the fence about this one. We'll see if in time it ages well. Lucy's genius status felt very far-fetched (others have mentioned that just because you are exceptional in math does not mean you're great in everything else...in fact, with the way Lucy doesn't know how to "read" situations, I have no idea how she would understand literature and be able to write at an exceptional level or see context in humanities. It just makes no sense). It's a shame because if that whole weird quirk wasn't there, I think I'd be wholeheartedly behind the book and how it portrays tough situations and friendship situations so well. ( )

Lucy, is the main character of the book who is a math genius after getting struck by lightning when she was a young girl. She became brilliant in math, but lacked social skills. Prior to entering college, her grandmother enrolled her in middle to improve her social skills where she faced many challenges. When Lucy was assigned a group project, she grew socially and academically. I recommend this book to middle school students because many students are able to relate to it, be motivated, and know that they need to learn to cope with their strengths and weaknesses. ( )

Lucy Callahan was hanging on a chain link fence during a thunderstorm when the fence was hit by lightning. As a result, Lucy has a type of brain damage called acquired savant syndrome - she has become a math genius. Since then, she has been homeschooled by her grandmother, but when Lucy wants to go to college, her Nana insists instead that she go to seventh grade at East Hamlin Middle School.

Lucy is not wild about the idea, but has no choice. She makes a deal to try school for one year. Right away, a girl named Windy is friendly, but most of the other kids make fun of Lucy's OCD: she takes three tries to sit down, and she's a germophobe.

When Windy, Lucy, and Levi form a team for their community service project, they decide to help out at the Pet Hut, and Lucy comes up with a formula to get dogs adopted faster. Things are going okay in middle school...until Windy's birthday party, when Windy spills Lucy's secrets to everyone, including mean girl Maddie.

Quotes

I'm starting to think working on a team is a form of torture. The teachers are doing this as part of a weird social experiment to see if they can make students hate each other. (ch. 16)

Levi sees things in an instant that I must miss every day....Levi and I live in the same world, but we see things very differently. I guess it would be boring if we all had the same view. (ch. 17) ( )

Cute middle-grade book, slice of life. ( )

What an unexpected find this book turned out to be! I loved Lucy - she was such an endearing protagonist despite the unlikely possibility of being struck by lightning and becoming a maths genius. I totally believed her struggles as she started middle school having previously been home-schooled. Not only did she have to hide her intelligence, she also battled with her OCD routines.

I also liked her friends, Levi and Wendy. They were both well-developed with distinct personalities. The three young people made a fabulous team and supported each other at all times, even when Windy unintentionally hurt Lucy. I thought their maths project was a wonderful idea and it allowed them to all work to their strengths.

Overall, "The Miscalculations of Lightning Girl" was a delightful read with charming characters and an engaging storyline. ( )
