The Everlasting Rose is the sequel to the book The Belles. Camille, Edel, and Remy are on the run and in hiding from soon to be Queen Sophia as they race to find where Princess Charlotte is hiding. With the help of the underground resistance called The Iron Ladies, Camille uses her powers, connections, and her cunning abilities to race against time to restore peace within Orleans.

The Everlasting Rose kept the same voice of Camille as with The Belles. She's a lot stronger now and more independent. She also has a rage inside her from the treatment of both her and her sisters. Yet, with all that, she's still very clueless when it comes to anything. I know her and her sisters were all very sheltered while growing up, and they were lied to about a lot of stuff, but she seemed to really struggle here. She was also very bland. I enjoyed her in the first book, but this second time around, it was either about her and whoever she was with at the time finding a new hiding spot, her newfound love for Remy, teacup dragons hiding in her sash, or how much she hates Sophia. That's it. Edel had some characteristic but hardly any interactions with Camille besides teaching her more about the arcana and being seasick. I would have loved to learn more about the side characters and see more interactions with them in this book.

The Everlasting Rose was a bit of a disappointment for me to be honest. I had conflict with the ending where it was rushed in a matter of a few pages. Almost like a "boom-bang-finish!". I was left feeling slightly underwhelmed. I don't want to give away anything with it, but like I said, Clayton spent these last two books building this whole world up and then I felt like she just deflated it to wrap up the storyline. It just made me sad for the missing magic the first book had. ( )

Soon to be Queen Sophie is obsessed with control and beauty. So much so that she is imprisoning Belles and experimenting with their blood. She wishes to create an endless supply of Belles to serve as tools to enhance the beauty of those willing to pay. On the run, Camille must find a way to stop Sophia and rescue her captured sisters. But for every step forward, obstacles will arise to test Camille’s resolve. As she enters the world of the resistance she will find herself unwillingly sacrificing those she loves in order to stop Sophia.

The theme of oppression may not be new to storytelling, but the way Dhonielle Clayton executes it is stunning. Camille has a hard road ahead of her as she learns everything she has ever been told is a lie. As the history of the Belles unfolds in greater detail, readers will be horrified at the way society has twisted something so pure into something so corrupt. Greed and vanity are powerful allies for those who feel privileged.

Camille’s character grows in leaps and bounds throughout The Everlasting Rose. And while the story had the chance to tip into a love triangle trope, Camille firmly put her foot down refusing to allow her feelings to get in the way of her goals. She is a passionate girl and watching her inner fire grow as she dedicated herself to changing the world was spellbinding. But it’s not just Camille that will enchant you. Each and every character within this story is so pronounced and unique. The cast of characters Dhonielle Clayton has created will be sure to capture your full attention.

And the way descriptions are written in this novel are luxurious and smooth. Colors are compared to things such as cream and pastries, adding to the elegant tone of writing. The audiobook narrator, Rosie Jones, did such an excellent job with accents adding even more depth to the settings. The sights, sounds, and emotions came together to create an enchanting version of New Orleans.

I’ve enjoyed my time with The Belles series. It’s like a breath of fresh air journeying with the characters and experiencing New Orleans through their eyes. The use of magic is original and the culture Dhonielle Clayton has created is fascinating. I hope to see more books in this series. I feel there is so much left to tell. ( )

I found this second book to be supremely disappointing. I loved the first book and was so excited for this one to come out! This book felt like it went nowhere. The characters seemed inconsistent and shallow and the plot felt all over the place. It felt like it was pages of nonsensical filler. I loved the first book so much that regardless of not liking this one I will still read the third book in hopes that it brings everything back together. ( )

A solid continuation of the story of [b:The Belles|23197837|The Belles (The Belles, #1)|Dhonielle Clayton|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1492784901l/23197837._SY75_.jpg|42742745]. Fast paced and full of danger. Still full of rich, detailed language that creates a wondrous and captivating world. Looks like Book 3 is in the works. There are definitely things in the world to be sorted out but this book still ends in a decent place. ( )

I don't enjoy characters that don't learn from their experiences. I was hoping this book would be one of growth for Camille, but she just kept diappointing me. Also the hourglass conceit was really grating on my nerves this time around. ( )
