“Ti troverò”, mi sussurrò all’orecchio. “Te lo prometto. Se dovrò sopportare due secoli di purgatorio, duecento anni senza di te… allora vorrà dire che sarà la punizione che mi sono meritato per i miei crimini: perchè ho mentito, ucciso, rubato e tradito. Ma c’è un’unica cosa che ristabilirà l’equilibrio. Quando sarò al cospetto di Dio, ci sarà un’unica cosa che farà pendere la bilancia in mio favore, contro tutto il resto”.
La sua voce si abbassò fin quasi a un sussurro, e le sue braccia si strinsero intorno a me.
“Signore, mi hai dato una donna strordinaria e Dio! io l’ho amata tanto.“
Degna fine del secondo volume della saga Outlander. Ovviamente la Gabaldon non si smentisce e, benché più corto degli altri – anche se ancora devo capire perché hanno separato questi due volumi visto quanto è breve -, è ugualmente ricco di suspense e di azione (più de L’Amuleto d’Ambra in effetti).
Finalmente comprendiamo perché e quando Clare è tornata nel futuro (che sarebbe stato il suo presente ma che per amor del neurone comune cerco di non complicare troppo la vita a tutti) e soprattutto come diavolo fa ad avere una figlia che sembra la copia al femminile di James Fraser.
La storia è scritta in modo magistrale e, in più punti, già a metà libro riusciamo ad intuire dove andrà a parare l’autrice portandoci, però, a temere il momento in cui i nostri dubbi saranno fugati. Inutile dire che, per le più emotive, è consigliato fornirsi di fazzolettini. No, forse non solo per gli emotivi.
Credo di aver trovato in questo libro una delle scene d’amore più belle che io abbia mai letto. Niente sdolcinatezze estreme ma amore puro affidato ai pochi secondi di tempo necessari a potersi dire addio. Una scena toccante e straziante. Assolutamente stupenda.
Il salto temporale che conclude il racconto di Clare ci permette di assaporare con rassegnata indulgenza la reazione di Brianna che, come era ovvio, vorrebbe scatenare l’inferno. Tipica testardaggine e caratteraccio Fraser, c’è poco da fare.
Una piacevole rivelazione è invece Roger. Incredibile ma vero, benché storico, crede a Clare forse aiutato dallo stato di disperazione che vede dilagare negli occhi della donna.
Alla fine un nuovo colpo di scena di sorprenderà!
Molti attenti lettori l’avranno già capito ma, per i più rilassati, c’è una piccola sorpresa. In realtà Roger non è proprio quello che sembra e Clare, ovviamente, sembra saperlo bene.
Affascinante e sconvolgente il finale che ti fa trattenere il fiato e dire “Ed ora? Come posso attendere il prossimo senza impazzire?”
