"In the second gritty installment of the Raven's Mark series, a bounty hunter faces down the darkest evil. Ryhalt Galharrow is a blackwing--a bounty hunter who seeks out and turns over any man, woman, or child who has been compromised by the immortals known as the Deep Kings. Four years have passed since he helped drive the Deep Kings back across the Misery. But new and darker forces are rising against the republic.."-- "Dark immortals never rest. Neither do the Blackwings who stand against them. Haunted by the bodies he's left in his wake, Blackwing captain Ryhalt Galharrow hunts spies, traitors and sorcerers along a blighted frontier of bad magic and vicious, mutated creatures. The remnant of apocalyptic war, the toxic wasteland he patrols has earned its name: the Misery. Beyond its twisted realities, the ancient Deep Kings plot their next move against the free states. When a garbled, frantic message from his godlike master sends Galharrow to an arcane vault, he finds its wards breached and an object of great power missing, propelling him into a race against time to return it. But in a city where new, insidious factions are rising and the corrupting influence of magic holds sway, can he trust even his closest allies? As Galharrow searches for the answers he needs, his journey will take him further and further into nightmare . . . perhaps even to the Misery's twisted heart"--… (mer)

I did not finish **Ravencry** by *Ed McDonald*. It's not bad Fantasy, but it's not outstanding either, and I noticed I just didn't care about the story or the characters, and didn't even notice when I stopped reading for several weeks. Life is too short for books I'm not interested in. ( )

Fantastically plotted, with a great rhythm to the story with only one or two minor lulls. The grand plot was really awesome and the crescendo of the story was both satisfying and well woven in by the earlier hooks. Some great scenes and a lot of quotable prose. Better than the first, great read. ( )

I have been eagerly awaiting the release of Ravencry and it was nothing like I was expecting but I really enjoyed it nonetheless. Whereas Blackwing gave us non-stop action, Ravencry was more about the changes occurring in Ryhalt himself. For the last four years things have been relatively calm for the Blackwings but Ryhalt has been slowly succumbing to heartbreak and an almost sort of general decay. What keeps him going is the thought that Ezabeth gave her life to protect the Range and he could do no less otherwise he felt that her sacrifice would have been in vain. My heart tore for Ryhalt because the moment Ezabeth died he truly stopped living.

Ryhalt had become a shell of a man and there is growth with his character but it is definitely on the inside. He has more sympathy and awareness of sentimentalities than what he had in the previous book but it was not something that as a character he was aware of but as a reader I could see the changes in him. These changes also affected the dynamics of his relationships with others which was interesting. There were certain possibilities in this story that existed for Ryhalt to choose and his entire life could have been on a different track which I really wanted for him. I was torn with indecision though because I felt myself wanting him to choose the other possibilities but at the same time I was with him for choosing his loyalties. It was a conundrum and I definitely felt myself going back and forth a lot.

The pace of Ravencry is slow but the story itself is visceral. The overarching plot with the Deep Kings trying to take over the Range was still ongoing. This time though, they had a new method of attack that is safer for them but their reasoning for their onward push was entirely different from last time. There is also an important portion of the story that takes place in the Misery and, wow, you don’t want to miss out on what happened there. Gave me a lot to chew on with how it will impact the story going forward. In addition, there is much going on politically as well as relating to religion in this story but behind it all is a puppet master of sorts. That my friends was the most chilling part of it all, so freaking creepy! Ravencry may be a far cry from its prequel but it is an essential part of the story that is to come and the ending was a wonderful but heartbreaking surprise that has me eagerly anticipating the next installment in the Raven’s Mark series.

This review is based on a complimentary book I received from NetGalley. It is an honest and voluntary review. The complimentary receipt of it in no way affected my review or rating. ( )
