I can’t say the writing was great, but the story was engaging, more so when I realized it was about Hedy Lamarr and based, at least in part, on a true story. ( ![]() Throughout this entire novel, though interesting and absorbing, I found it impossible to engage with Hedy as a character. It is not until the final few pages of the book, (which are outstanding), that we get a glimpse of the real Hedy, as well as further illumination of the authors ultimate message. How can we not be moved by the failures of past generations to recognize and validate their women and their accomplishments? With fresh eyes and our current broader societal context, Hedy Lamar, in her entirety, can now be appreciated and is transformed into a wonderful role model for generations now and to come. I spied the paperback at Goodwill on one of my last book shopping jaunts before the pandemic lockdown. Around the year in 52 books challenge notes: #36. A book from your TBR/wishlist that you don't recognize, recall putting there, or put there on a whim Learned more about her than as just an actress. Felt sorry for her being made to marry a man just for Jewish security and then he mistreated her. Much more intelligent than guessed from her beginning behaviors to have learned and memorized such military details. How could Fritz not realize nudity of her early movie. Surprised by her determination to help war effort just due to guilt. Viena, 1933.
She possessed a stunning beauty. She also possessed a stunning mind. Could the world handle both? Her beauty almost certainly saved her from the rising Nazi party and led to marriage with an Austrian arms dealer. Underestimated in everything else, she overheard the Third Reich's plans while at her husband's side, understanding more than anyone would guess. She devised a plan to flee in disguise from their castle, and thewhirlwind escape landed her in Hollywood. She became Hedy Lamarr, screen star. But she kept a secret more shocking than her heritage or her marriage: she was a scientist. And she knew a few secrets about the enemy. She had an idea that might help the country fight the Nazis...if anyone would listen to her. A powerful novel based on the incredible true story of the glamour icon and scientist whose groundbreaking invention revolutionized modern communication, The Only Woman in the Roomis a masterpiece.
