How does a story begin? Sometimes it begins with a dream, and a dreamer. Mary is one such dreamer, a little girl who learns to read by tracing the letters on the tombstone of her famous feminist mother, Mary Wollstonecraft, and whose only escape from her strict father and overbearing stepmother is through the stories she reads and imagines. Unhappy at home, she seeks independence, and at the age of sixteen runs away with poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, another dreamer. Two years later, they travel to Switzerland where they meet a famous poet, Lord Byron. On a stormy summer evening, with five young people gathered around a fire, Byron suggests a contest to see who can create the best ghost story. Mary has a waking dream about a monster come to life. A year and a half later, Mary Shelley's terrifying tale, Frankenstein: or, the Modern Prometheus, is published -- a novel that goes on to become the most enduring monster story ever and one of the most popular legends of all time. A riveting and atmospheric picture book about the young woman who wrote one of the greatest horror novels ever written and one of the first works of science fiction, Mary Who Wrote Frankenstein is an exploration of the process of artistic inspiration that will galvanize readers and writers of all ages.… (mer)

A tender tale of how Frankenstein came to be!

I first saw this in my library in the reserved pile for a customer. I took a picture of it with my phone and have been thinking of it ever since. Glad I got to read it today.

I LOVED the illustrations. They add so much delicious detail, mood and atmosphere. The books on little Mary's floor. The portrait of her mother by the bed. This dark, gloomy, inspirational book is one of my immediate favourites.

Love, love, love. Will have to reread this for sure! ( )

This picture book biography of Mary Shelley touches briefly on her early life and then investigates the circumstances behind the writing of her famous novel Frankenstein. It is appropriate for fairly young readers (although death of a parent, as well as some other dark elements may not make it the best read for sensitive readers). An author's note goes into more details than the main story for readers who want to learn more. (A bibliography is also provided for those who want to do further research.) The illustrations throughout are lovely -- they provide tons of extra details to draw the eye in and use a dark palette along with some unusual images for just the right amount of creepiness. ( )

Top 100 pick because:

Mary Shelley. I don't need to write much else really...but alright the accounts of Mary are newly fascinating each time I read them. And in recent years there have been various versions of the imfamous dare to write a ghost story in books, graphic novels, & movies. This book is absolutely my favorite so far, likely because it does actually focus on Mary more than the others. The illustrations are utter perfection for the subject matter-gothic inspired-a certain dark, macabre drama in tone and texture. I love it. ( )

Family favourite Linda Bailey has written one perfect book for the Halloween season: Mary Who Wrote Frankenstein, illustrated by Júlia Sardà, published by Tundra Books.
In the 200th anniversary the appetite for Frankenstein is renewed this year. With Shane Peacock’s recently published Edgar Brim trilogy, Canadian kidlit authors are shining the spotlight on the classics of the horror/science fiction genre and bringing these stories to the forefront and giving them a renewed audience.

Mary Who Wrote Frankenstein is fascinating. The story of Mary Shelley, a girl who experienced much loss and coldness in her childhood but who was strong, resilient, and brave. She forged her own path, a path that led her to famous authors and poets, and a path that set in motion all of the pieces of the story Frankenstein. Young readers will be able to connect the dots and you will see the light bulbs going off in their heads as they read through Mary’s early life. Her early encounters with the epic poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Castle Frankenstein, and modern science. Linda Bailey also leaves us with an amazing author’s note at the back. This story was extensively researched and we are left with so much more information about the famous Mary Shelley and her journey to Frankenstein. Mary Who Wrote Frankenstein is a fantastic non-fiction picture book.

Let’s talk about the illustrations, there was no one more perfect to illustrate this tale than Julia Sarda. Her perfectly eerie and unique illustrative style completely capture Mary’s story. Her illustrations may not be for everyone but they are perfection in this story. ( )

Beautiful, morose illustrations for the dark-hearted child in us all. While I question what parent would buy this for their child, or what child would pick up a book about the author of Frankenstein, I must admit I thoroughly enjoyed reading this simplified biography of Mary Shelley's life. Written like a picture book with illustrations of grave stones and dissected frogs, this book impresses the reader with the truly amazing story of a strong-headed 18-year-old girl who defied her culture and wrote something truly horrid and wonderful at the same time.
