Really brought me back to what it was like being a teen who liked slender man and other creepypasta back in the day. I loved the unique format and unusual writing style that ultimately jived with me. If anyone was an internet teen back in the late thousands and early teens, then this book is for you. Light on the horror and just about as fun as it could possibly be. Overall, just good spooky fun!!! I would recommend this to most people lol. 10/10 check it out for a fun, quick read!! Wow. So, I was not expecting much from this. Everything was pointing to it being anywhere from completely terrible to a guilty pleasure. I mean, the author is listed as Anonymous and it's about an internet boogeyman. This book is self aware, and I think that adds to it. It would have been a bit cringe if it was like, Dun Dun DUN...Slenderman is REAL! I didn't think it was creepy, but then I would look at the shadows in the corner of the room and feel a bit unsettled. Also, an umbrella falling off a shelf in the closet while I was reading did not help! It's one of those books where you don't think that it's scaring you until it does. Overall, it is a well written and interesting take on the Slenderman mythos. The style and subject of this book intrigued me - Slender Man (real or imagined) and written "Through fragments of journals, news stories, and online conversations..." seemed like a can't miss. But for me, it missed wildly. Especially the online conversations, which read like super winy teenagers, with really no substance and barely any plot relativity. On the plus side, their inclusion makes this a blessedly quick read. I'd say that this should be for young adults, but there is a ton of "f" bombs in it that might make parents uncomfortable. But the story isn't very strong, in any format, so maybe it shouldn't be for anyone. I'm glad it was a "slender" read! Following a high school aged boy named Matthew, this creepy story is written in not only journal form, but also switches between audio recordings, emails, newspaper articles, reddit posts, texts, police interview transcripts, and pages of the character's own fictional story. It begins when he starts seeing a therapist, going to her every Tuesday after school with the hopes of fixing the nightmares that plague his nights. One man's search for the truth about one of the most intriguing urban legends ever--the modern bogeyman, Slender Man--leads him down a dark, dangerous path in this creepy supernatural fantasy that will make you question where the line between dark myth and terrifying reality begins. Lauren Bailey has disappeared. As friends at her exclusive school speculate on what happened and the police search for answers, Matt Barker dreams of trees and a black sky . . . and something drawing closer. Through fragments of journals, news stories, and online conversations, a figure begins to emerge--a tall, slender figure--and all divisions between fiction and delusion, between nightmare and reality, begin to fall. Chilling, eerie, and addictively readable, Slender Man is a unique spine-tingling story and a brilliant and frightening look at one of the most fascinating--and diabolical--mythical figures in modern times.
