The public can't know they exist. It could start a panic. The average citizen is perfectly fine with superheroes saving the day or causing mayhem in movies and comic books. But if those suprahumans actually walked among us, what would happen then?In a crumbling post-war city of the future, private eye Charlie Madison stands in the gap. The last of his kind, a champion of lost causes, he confronts corrupt cops, violent bratva and yakuza, doing whatever he can for the average citizen in need of help. A war veteran with plenty of hardship in his past, he's not afraid to go toe-to-toe with the powers that be, whether they're in the criminal underworld or the federal government.Madison has encountered more than his share of unusual suspects over the years. But this time he's up against something he's never seen before, on or off the battlefield: people with unnatural abilities. Suprahumans. Gifted ones. Their powers are too incredible to believe, too dangerous in this unstable world. Their existence is a secret guarded by government agents who mindwipe anyone encountering them. For Charlie Madison, the Suprahuman Secret emerges when a little girl goes missing and no ransom demand is made. He takes the case, but time isn't on his side. After 48 hours in this town, it's unlikely an abducted child will be found in one piece. As the mystery unfolds, Madison uncovers a bizarre truth about the girl that seems impossible. But it could explain why she was kidnapped -- and why she might still be alive.Collects 4 Crime Noir / Science Fiction Novellas from the Case Files of Charlie Madison, P.I.: Girl of Great Price, Immaterial Evidence, Yakuza Territory, and Chimera Effect… (mer)

An epic collection of old school PI noir style novellas.... This is not my usual choice of reading but I thoroughly enjoyed the plots, the character development and the story line... The audio book narrator gives this book the extra boost that pushed it over the edge of great. There is a lot going on in these pages and this sci-fi futuristic Dick Tracy story entertained for all 36 choaters! ( )

A collection of fun fantasy stories with an old fashioned PI as the main character. This futuristic fantasy book has excellent world building and likeable well developed characters. Contains good storylines, plenty of action, twists, lots of detail, and unexpected plots. The audio version of this book was very well narrated. Very enjoyable stories that I would highly recommend. Taking place in a post-apocalyptic western world future, the book is a collection of stories about a world-weary ‘guy noir’ type of private eye named Charlie Madison. His chief nemesis is an ethnic Russian crime boss who controls the seedy part of the city. Although being a pain in the neck to the Feds who are dealing with bigger issues, they decide he’s useful to them due to his excellent investigative skills and partner up with him on cases they had an interest in.

Madison’s alliance with the Feds is an uneasy one historized with mutual threats. In appreciation for his help, the Feds neutralized the Russian crime boss by blocking his memories as to his hatred of Madison. They hold this over Madison’s head by threatening to reverse that mind conditioning whenever he gets out of line. In return, Madison threatens the Feds with exposure of the fact that mutant humans with suprahuman powers exist and are causing havoc. The Feds feel that the disclosure of this threat should be stifled as a western public dealing with the environmental aftermath of a chemical war cannot deal with another threat at this time.

I didn’t think that I’d like this book with I started reading since it is not my preferred genre, but I did very much like it. The audiobook narrator, Robert Rossmann, greatly added to my reading enjoyment by bringing out Madison’s character with a wryness in his voice, perfectly matching the guy noir style made famous in old-time radio dramas. The short stories kept me entertained during my morning run and kept my mind off the tiredness in my legs and making me look forward to the next run when I would again be able to pick up the story where I left off. The Suprahuman Secret well deserves the five stars that I’m rating it. ( )

A Futuristic, Sci-Fi Mystery.

I think that is the best way to describe this book. There were so interesting with so many twists and turns that kept me turning the page. It is set in the United States, long after it is no longer the United States. I loved the little mentions of the past and the landmarks that made this world so recognizable.

Out of the four novellas, the first one was my favorite. I loved everything about it. From the case to the world-building to the main character and his enemies. But this left me a little disappointed with the rest of the book because I wanted them to be just as good as that first one.

I loved the main character, Charlie Madison. He had a very distinct personality and did not fall flat to me. I felt like I really got to know him over the course of the story. I would say my only complaint about Charlie is that I do not think he grew or changed over the course of the book. I think he was in exactly the same position at the start of the book as he was at the end. Only with a little more knowledge.

This book was a bit repetitive, but I don't hold that against Fowler since it was a collection of short stories. It was a little boring as I read it though. I didn't want to hear a recap of the previous three novellas when I was finally in the exciting finale. I heard Charlie tell the same story to his friends at least twice. I do feel like that all comes from the fact that it was a collection of novellas though since you are supposed to be able to pick any of them up and read it without being confused.

There were loose ends that didn't get tied up and events that I really wanted to happen that didn't. However, there is a sequel and these two facts just make me what to pick it up so I can see how everything comes together and if what I'm hoping for happens or not. *Please, please, please*

One of my biggest complaints with indie authors and unknown books is the writing itself. But Fowler did not disappoint me. The writing kept my attention and was easy to read, without feeling like it was written for children. It flowed really well within each story and I never got lost in a too long monologue or unnecessary description. I think Fowler included what needed to be there and did it really well.

I gave this book a 4 out of 5 stars. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves Dystopian or Sci-Fi. I think they would really enjoy this twist on the genres. ( )
