Sometimes the difference between a love story and a horror story is where the ending comes... While Jude fought for power in the Court of Elfhame against the cruel Prince Cardan, her sister Taryn began to fall in love with the trickster, Locke. Half-apology and half-explanation, it turns out that Taryn has some secrets of her own to reveal. Locke will forever be an ass and Taryn will forever be a bitch - unless she redeems herself should there be a novella about her and the Ghost. Loved how this novella made me hate her more than I already did. ( )

*The Cruel Prince (maybe?) spoilers*

This novella, told from Taryn’s perspective, is so poetic and well-written. I love that we get to understand why Taryn did the things she did and how sorry she is, although I still don’t like her that much.

Date read: 2021.01.08; putting this here because I might remove the “dates read” if it messes with my average page count too much ( )

I really, really dislike having to read ebooks (I get eough screen time at work and nothing beats the feel of a physical book), but sometimes we have to break the mold to not miss a story. I finally read The Wicked King last month and totally got back into the story of Jude's fight to establish her place at the Court of Faerie, so I didn't want to let this novella slip through the cracks. Jude is normally the narrator in this series (it's all about her), but Holly Black changes perspectives to fill in some fo the blanks from Jude's twin sister Taryn's point of view. The novella takes the form of an extended letter written by Taryn to Jude (I imagine given to her prior to Taryn's wedding to Locke) meant to explain away her own behaviour. Jude may have managed to learn how to survive in the Faerie world through politics and intrigue, but Taryn's methodology is equally as interesting. That being said, I'm glad that Black decided to play the political themes more strongly by telling Jude's story, because we've seen the "falling in love for Faerie" story done a million times (and by Black herself). It was nice getting a break from all the politics, though, so I'm now ready to dive into the last book in this trilogy when it comes out later this year! ( )

I mean, for a short short story it wasnt bad - wasn't captivating though and I wandered a lot ( )

I realised that Locke might teach me lessons, but he wasn't going to like what I did once I learned them.

So this wasn't too much of anything, really, or at least didn't tell me too much that The Wicked King didn't tell me - which of course isn't this little story's fault since I wasn't supposed to have read the sequel anyways.

But I do like Taryn and so it was neat seeing things through her eyes; I have half the rage everyone else seems to, and she's way more interesting, pathetic, and sympathetic than infuriating to me. also everything Holly touches just turns into pure melodious magic. ( )
