Julia and Connor uncover a chain of unsolved violent crimes tied to an on-line website where the therapist has his patients post lethal fantasies. Of course you know where this is going. Someone has decided to turn virtual reality into actual reality. A very good story. I just enjoyed the story, the excitement of figuring out the bad guy and of course the ending, I never saw that coming. Started this April 15th, 2014 just after finishing [b:Speak No Evil|91378|Speak No Evil (No Evil Trilogy, #1)|Allison Brennan|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1386925047s/91378.jpg|88170]. The "Evil" series is very bloody, brutal and has a rather high body count. Nonetheless I think these are the best books so far from Allison Brennan. A few sex-scenes, a bit of romance, but I consider the last sex-scene as too long, and boring, all where non-kinky and while not distracting, where not very interesting, and rather as pause from all the sadistic killing, a necessary break. Although the ending is again predictable, and in most books rather the same (fight near the end, main baddie dies), there are enough twists and red herrings I could not guess who the leader was. Also I may have lost the view over the whole entangled group of people, some with name-changes, a few liars and a labyrinth of relations and reasons for killing, added to that different mind-diseases. Again, so far, this is by far the most complicated book. In nearly all books there is a fine line for justice and vengeance and a stand taken against self-justice and vigilantes. I like that. Very highly recommended. A good suspense story with a little romance and plenty of action that moved right along. I liked how they all worked to solve the crime but the progression of the hate-to-love relationship was not very believable. When her niece is accused of killing her stepfather, Deputy District Attorney Julia Chander must join forces with Private Investigator Connor Kincaid to overcover the web of lies and intrigue surrounding the murder. This is made all the more difficult given Julia and Connor's turbulent past.
The suspense plot involves captivating themes of vigilantism and the vulnerability of young people to manipulation. The cult-like vigilante group with its mysterious, enigmatic leader behind the scenes has a chilling effect on the reader. One problem, however, is the lack of character development for some of the secondary cast as well as a need to offer up less obvious red herrings and villains.
The romance is enjoyable as both Connor and Julia are sympathetic characters, and their relationship develops slowly from hate and distrust to admiration and love. They take their time overcoming their individual reservations and giving in to their mutual attraction. They have good chemistry and their connection in believable.
One last comment is about the writing style. There is an awkwardness surrounding the progression of certain events. It is as if Brennan wants the reader to come to a certain conclusion yet has failed to provide the necessary foundation and detail for the leap of logic that is necessary to reach said conclusion.
All in all, a satisfying read and I look forward to the final book in the trilogy, which is Dillon's story.
