Into the Jungle is a modern classic in the making, as Katherine Rundell creates charming and compelling origin stories for all Kipling's best-loved characters, from Baloo and Shere Khan to Kaa and Bagheera. As Mowgli travels through the Indian jungle, this brilliantly visual tale, which weaves each short story together into a wider whole, will make readers both laugh and cry. Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book, first published by Macmillan in 1894, is one of the most enduring books of children's literature, delighting generations of children. Katherine Rundell has taken this as the basis of her new and enchanting tale, sharing the early years of favorite characters and informing the creatures they become in Kipling's classic, with stories about family and friendship, loyalty and jungle law, and a final battle which will decide the future of the forest.… (mer)

This is a gorgeous book! Not only are the illustrations beautiful, but the book itself is a delight, with thick pages and a built-in ribbon bookmark. And yes, the stories more than live up to their packaging.

This is a beautiful, entertaining book of short stories with wonderful illustrations. The short stories are engaging and I enjoyed Mowgli as a kind of "guide" through them as he is the connecting figure. It's been years since I read The Jungle Book and it was fun to read a book of new stories in that genre. While this book could certainly stand alone, I think it is probably better as a companion to the original.

Original short stories about characters from Kipling Jungle Book that connect the man-cub Mowgli and with the animals in the Indian jungle. This series of connected stories about the man-cub Mowgli and his adventures among the animals in the Indian jungle. The colorful illustrations complement the stories well. The themes across all the stories is the understanding and empathy across species, cultures, and genders. Stories are suitable for ages 9-17. ( )

This was a wonderful companion story to the original Jungle Book! This had so many wonderful illustrations and it was great to see backstories about many favorite characters. A great chapter book for daytime reading or for bedtime. ( )

A beautifully produced book that i look forward to reading to my son when he is older. Familiar characters come to life in the five stories told here. The language is rich and evocative and sure to spark the imagination. I'm not crazy about the illustrations, but they do give a sense of the density of the jungle. I also like the just about every page has some sort of little decoration if not a full illustration. ( )
