Short chronological essays are interspersed with introductions and portraits of prominent players in the suffrage movement. Illustrations throughout provide the reader with depictions of events and the occasional humorous take on events.

Though it would be a tough one for an elementary school student to get through provides great relatable detail and is well researched! Could be a fun one to flip through and learn more about this important movement. I would consider buying as it would be a great resource for student research or teacher presentations.

Women’s suffrage is the right of women to vote. Beginning in the late 19th century, women sought to change the voting laws to allow them to vote. Women gained the right to vote in the United States after ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920. In the United Kingdom, women had equal suffrage with men in 1928. Most Canadian women gained suffrage between 1917-1919, however it wasn’t until 1960 that aboriginal women gained the right to vote. Native American women and women of color were often denied the right to vote in the United States until passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Suffragette: The Battle for Equality was a great book detailing the struggles of the suffragettes and suffragists (not the same) in the US and UK was very interesting to read! The book focuses almost exclusively on UK with passing mentions about the US and other commonwealths of UK. It would have be nice to have more information about the US and also more accessibility of the text to a younger audience (glossary, text boxes with background for context, etc.) Overall, a great read! David Roberts has penned a well-researched and detailed chronological summary for a youth audience of women's fight to vote. The cover description suggests that it covers the suffrage movement in both the United States and the United Kingdom, and though there are token mentions of the parallel cause happening simultaneously in the U.S., this is really a book about the fight for women's suffrage in the U.K. Despite feeling misled about the scope, as an American it was actually quite interesting to read about some of the key players across the pond, as my own education obviously focused on efforts closer to home. The contrast between the surprisingly more bold and violent actions in the UK and the rather more peaceful campaigns in the U.S. (at least on the part of the women!) was also intriguing.

Suffragette : the battle for equality is the story of how women got the right to vote. Dave Roberts has written and illustrated this history for young people with leaders, opponents and history in both the United States and Great Britain. Roberts does not skip anything in the story. In England, the struggle was dramatic, with everything short of bodily harm OK for the suffragettes and suffragists. Arrests were common and the government did not allow the men and women to go on hunger strikes, but condoned force feeding. In the end, women did receive the vote both here and in Britain. And the fight goes on all over the world with Roberts listing several women who have fought for rights in their countries.

In addition to the marvelous illustrations, Roberts provides a bibliography with further reading for advanced students. He also includes the music to Dame Ethel Smyth’s “March of the women” dedicated to the Women’s Social and Political Union which includes that marvelous line from the Masterpiece production portrayal of the Pankhursts : “Shoulder to shoulder and friend to friend!”

And did you know that the term “suffragette” is not synonomous with “suffragist?” Read the book and find out the reasons ( )
