They're now working on a house that was owned by the late Cal Juniper, a man who used to date Jazzi's aunt Lynda. Lynda moved to New York after breaking up with Cal and didn't bother to keep in touch with her family. Now they know why. Lynda's bones have been found in Cal's attic. Look, there's a pug on the cover :-) This is a book about food with some house-flipping and murder on the side. I love watching shows about flipping and fixing and all that, so this was interesting and refreshing. Family and friends were close and would get together every Sunday to, you guessed it, eat. George, the pug, would drink beer and eat lots of people food which I did not like. The mystery itself was fine. Things happened extremely fast between Jazzi and the contractor. I get that it's just a book and things have to flow for the sake of the story but some of these things just really irritated me and took away from my enjoyment of the book overall. Thank you to Netgalley and Kensington Books for an e-copy. Jazzi Zanders and her cousin Jerod are house flippers and this story starts out with them buying at auction the home of an old friend of the family that has passed away. His ungrateful heirs just want to get rid of the headaches and get the money. Jazzi and Jerod begin the demo in the house but when they get to the attic they find a trunk with a skeleton. When Jazzi is able to identify some of the artifacts in the trunk, her family is brought in to the investigation of what happen and how that body got there. Prevented from further work indoors temporarily, the cousins start out in the yard but work again is halted by the discovery of a more recent murder victim buried in the yard. This mystery was very well-written connecting the old ad the new. The characters seem to be well-drawn and I am looking forward to another in this series. The Body in the Attic, the first Jazzi Zanders Mystery, was a surprisingly emotive cozy for me. Judy Lynn, the author, really causes me to care about the deaths (count ‘em- two) in the novel. I think this may be why The Body in the Attic stands out to me. Usually, the dead people are so odious everybody, including the reader, is glad they’re gone. In this case, I guess I felt real pain for those left behind. Jazzi and her cousin Jerod are house flippers who find a certain body in the attic of the latest house they are fixing up. I love the love triangle that Ansel, their construction contractor, gets involved in, but it was weird. For once I thought sure I knew who was guilty. But no, Lynn did a great job and I missed it by a mile. Great snarky quote? “...she chased dollar signs harder than greyhounds chase rabbits.” I do need to add the caveat that I do not agree with all situations and language in the book, but I still enjoyed this new start to a series and look forward to the next. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley. All opinions are my own and no positive review was required. The Body in the Attic by Judi Lynn Book #1: A Jazzi Zanders Mystery Source: NetGalley My Rating: 4½/5 stars **MINI-REVIEW** The Bottom Line: I tried three times to write my normal long-winded review and kept feeling as if I were giving too much away and I certainly don’t want to deny you the awesome of this book, dear reader. I found this book to be an excellent example of a cozy mystery with fine and engaging characters, just enough mystery to keep me guessing, terribly interesting background/backstory, and a heat level absolutely appropriate for the genre. This is one of those books where I really resented having responsibilities because I wanted to keep reading until I finished, each and every time I picked this one up. What’s more, this first-in-a-series book didn’t have the failings many such books have. In fact, I found The Body in the Attic to be incredibly well-written with the feel of a seasoned author who knows all the writing pitfalls and how to avoid them. I’m all in with Jazzi Zanders and simply can’t wait for her next adventure. inga recensioner | lägg till en recension

The Body in the Attic is the first book in the "Body in the.....'' mystery series. A second book, The Body in the Wetlands'' will be out in 2019. Judi Lynn is the author of several romance books including the Mill Pond Romances series.
The basics: Jasmine "Jazzi'' Zanders flips houses along with her cousin Jerod. After four years they are pretty good at it. Most of the time they make good money. This time, their project is a home of a recently deceased family friend. In fact, the man was engaged to Jazzi's Aunt Lynda before she ran off to New York more than 25 years ago and never came back. Lynda was a bit of a wild, free spirit having been engaged multiple times, breaking it off with each man when she found someone more interesting. Jazzi and Jerod are both completely shocked when they begin cleaning out the attic and find a stained cedar trunk. Inside is a skeleton, red hair still clinging to the skull and a silver locket around its neck. Aunt Lynda.....she never ran off to New York after all.....
When I request review copies of books, I promise to give an honest review. I carefully read each book....and then I give my honest opinion. And I'm going to do that with this book just like all the others. That being said.....
I really wanted to like this book. I tried....but it really felt like a formula romance novel with a bit of mystery sprinkled on top. A lot of fluff and little substance. The plot of a long-time missing family member being discovered dead is one that has been used so many times, it just fell flat for me. The minute I read the first chapter and learned about the missing aunt, I knew they would find the body in the house. There is very little character or setting/background theme development. The writing style is choppy, and the mystery is just too simple with very little suspense or investigation. I knew the identity of the killer before I even reached the half-way point of the story.
This book just isn't for me. That doesn't mean that others won't read it and absolutely love it.
