A captivating novel based on the story of the extraordinary real-life American woman who secretly worked for the French Resistance during World War II--while playing hostess to the invading Germans at the iconic Hotel Ritz in Paris--from the New York Times bestselling author of The Aviator's Wife and The Swans of Fifth Avenue. In March 1940, the Nazis sweep Paris and immediately take up residence in one of the city's most iconic sites: The Hotel Ritz. There, under a roof legendary for its unprecedented luxury and for its fabled residents--including Coco Chanel, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Cole Porter, Hemingway, Balanchine, Doris Duke, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and now Hermann Göering--the Nazis rule over a paralyzed city. But two residents of the Ritz refuse to be defeated: its director, Claude Auzello, and his beautiful American actress wife, Blanche. They not only oversee the smooth workings of the hotel, but both Blanche and Claude throw themselves fearlessly into the dangerous and clandestine workings of the French Resistance. This is a true-to-life novel of a courageous woman and her husband who put their marriage--and ultimately their lives--in jeopardy to fight for freedom. Intimate, fearless, and moving, it spins a brilliantly and unforgettably vivid human portrait at a time of unimaginable crisis and sacrifice.… (mer)

I had a hard time with the first half of this book. It seemed like forever to set the backdrop (150 pages!) and each chapter was jumping around in time, I got very confused. However, after the scene was finally set, the book moved right along, and I had a hard time wanting to skip ahead to see what was going to happen. I learned a lot of interesting history from that time that I was not familiar with. Overall, I recommend this book to those who like historical fiction. ( )

With her husband Claude the esteemed director of the Ritz Hotel in Paris, transplanted American Blanche Auzello is used to moving in Paris' glamorous and glitzy circles, welcoming famous, well-heeled and entitled guests from all over. During the Nazi occupation of Paris during World War II, however — and, even more offensive, their occupation of the Ritz itself — Blanche's and Claude's lives are forever changed.

Made more interesting due to being based on real people and events, I enjoyed the book somewhat, though it didn't quite tick all my boxes. Because I read Marius Gabriel's The Parisians fairly recently, I couldn't help but compare (perhaps unfairly) this book to it, and unfortunately Mistress of the Ritz came up a bit short for me. For another take on Paris during the Nazi occupation, including an overlap of a number of these same characters, I do very much recommend Gabriel's work.

I received this ARC via LibraryThing's Early Reviewers program. ( )

The novel brought up some interesting conflicts from the war. At what point is it considered becoming a "collaborator?" How much passive resistance do you have to perform to avoid the punishment for that moniker? I found Claude's story to be a bit more interesting than Blanche's, although I really enjoyed the back-and-forths she shared with Coco Chanel. These people were so mismatched, but I suppose that's to be expected when you marry a stranger from another country. The afterword that reveals what happened to these real people just killed it for me. Really? That what happened to them? That just instantly vaporized any affection I had developed for this novel. I might recommend this to readers interested in Paris at that time, but I would caution against reading the afterword, unless you want to be disturbed by the information contained therein. ( )

It took me a while to pick this book up to read. I thought the story would be too heavy and difficult to finish, however the book was more lighthearted than I imagined. The story is based on the real life couple known as Claude and Blanche Auzello. Claude is the hotel director of the Ritz during the Nazi occupation of Paris in WWII. Blanche is his American wife. Though they had a turbulent marriage filled with infidelity, childless and frivolity, they remained married and dedicated to each other.

It was fascinating to read about Coco Chanel, about the resistance and the life of Nazi leadership in Paris. Blanche had secrets to keep from the Nazi's, but finds herself wanting to help the resistance. Claude seemed focused on keeping things smooth for the Nazi party. This causes intense friction between the couple. I enjoyed the Author's Note at the end of the book that explained what became of Claude and Blanche after the war.
I received a free copy in exchange for a review from Librarything Early Reviewers. ( )

Melanie Benjamin is one of my favorite authors. I've enjoyed nearly everything I've read by her. "Mistress of the Ritz" did not disappoint. It has at its core "a big juicy story" (as Benjamin described it). Set mainly in WWII, "inspired by" (again the author's words) historical characters it features the alternating stories of the American flapper/aspiring actress Blanche Ross Auzello and her buttoned-down, terribly French husband Claude Auzello who becomes the director of the famous Ritz Hotel in Paris. The two fight and love and keep dangerous secrets during their decades-long marriage, sharing their lives with the ever-present Ritz and its famous pre-war inhabitants such as Coco Chanel and Ernest Hemingway who give way to its more infamous Nazi occupiers. It's an exciting story, bringing these to characters vividly to life against a backdrop of danger and intrigue. ( )
