To me, this felt more like a book featuring a child, than a book written for children, although I think it's being billed as YA and sold in the kids' section of bookstores. There were a lot of deep emotions and the revelations about how the main characters were dealing with their loss felt weightier than I would expect most kids to be able to follow. I can see kids reading it and focusing on the adventures, which are a lot of fun, then returning to it when they're older and can reflect on and understand the characters' losses and how they manage them. It's a shame that this wonderful story by Dan Gemeinhart did not win at least an Honor award in the 2019 Newbery voting. Coyote and her father, Rodeo, are driving all over the U.S. in an old converted school bus, trying to outrun their memories of the car crash that killed her mother and two sisters. Coyote finally realizes she is lonely, and adopts a kitten after rescuing a stranger. Following a call with her grandmother, who tells her that the local park is being redeveloped, Coyote decides she needs to go home to rescue a memory box buried there even though her father will never agree. As she hatches her plan, they begin to accumulate others will equally strong needs for help and friendship, creating the family that was lost five years ago: a musician trying to get to his girl in Idaho, a son and his mother fleeing an abusive father, a girl looking for adventure, and eventually a goat. Lots of fun and warmth for the soul. 4.5 stars. Recommended. ( )

children's middlegrade fiction (grieving 12-y.o. returns with her dad to the town where her mom and sisters died 5 years ago, makes friends along the way)
This is one of those books that just keeps punching you in the feels--so much sadness but so much good, too. ( )

Coyote Sunrise will fall into my highly dramatic realistic fiction reader's advisory list. I am always surprised at how middle schoolers react to tragedy, but many love it. I believe it is a way to live their every changing, pre-teen emotions vicariously through the book characters. Coyote Sunrise does not disappoint with a first person, mature-for-12 year old protagonist trying to heal from the death of her mother and sisters. A road trip in the unconventional setting of a converted school bus provides the vehicle of self-realization as flawed "hitch hikers" join the trip and provide Coyote with moral guidance and encouragement to seek closure with the deaths. Coyote is the likable heroine of the adventure, making surprising choices like driving the school bus and breaking into an empty music hall for an impromptu concert. The book needs to be read through the eyes of a child in order to suspend disbelief. As an adult reader, it does not portray a healthy lifestyle or familial relationship with her father. However, children/teen novels need to remove adults in order for the child/teen protagonist to develop and be in charge of their own adventure. I would recommend this title to readers who enjoyed: Wonder by Polaccio, The One and Only Ivan by Applegate, One for the Murphys by Hunt, Counting by Sevens by Sloan and Out of My Mind by Draper.

A story full of heart, joy, friendship, and sadness. It's going to be a while before I recover from this book.

Coyote, and her Dad, Rodeo, live and wander on an old school bus. They follow their own rules, and their own whims, occasionally taking on a passenger. But their lives are not as light-hearted as they may appear, and their wandering also helps them avoid the loss of Coyote's mom and sisters. ( )

Yeah. Maybe I'm a little broken. Maybe I'm a little fragile. But I think of Val, and Salvador, and Lester, and I think it's all right. Maybe we're all a little broken. Maybe we're all a little fragile. Maybe that's why we need each other so much.
I look up at the Holy Hell Bell, and it's gleaming like St. Peter's gates up there in a sun ray and I think about standing up and ringing it, but I don't, because it ain't that kind of moment It's just not. It's rich and it's full and it's a certain deep kind of happy, but it's already ringing with its own quiet music.
I stand there, looking out at the world we're driving into. None of it had to happen. Not one bit. Sunrises and sunsets and ice cream cones never had to exist, shooting stars and acoustic guitars and holding hands, good books and warm blankets and goodnight kisses--none of them ever had to be. Mama and Ava and Rose never had to live and breathe; they could've never come to be. Rodeo and me and Yager and Lester and Grandma and Salvador and Val and Ivan could've never come to be. All of it, every little bit, could've never happened, and I could've never seen it and I'd never even know I hadn't. But it did. And I did. Oh, I did. There is so much happiness in the world. There is so much sadness in the world. There is just so much in the world.
