"This is a story about America during and after Reconstruction, one of history's most pivotal and misunderstood chapters. In a stirring account of emancipation, the struggle for citizenship and national reunion, and the advent of racial segregation, the renowned Harvard scholar delivers a book that is illuminating and timely. Real-life accounts drive the narrative, spanning the half century between the Civil War and Birth of a Nation. Here, you will come face-to-face with the people and events of Reconstruction's noble democratic experiment, its tragic undermining, and the drawing of a new "color line" in the long Jim Crow era that followed. In introducing young readers to them, and to the resiliency of the African American people at times of progress and betrayal, Professor Gates shares a history that remains vitally relevant today."--Provided by publisher.… (mer)

A very insightful history (that is NOT taught in school) which is aimed toward middle school and older students, this text presents facts, dates, politics, primary sources in a manner easy to follow and understand. The best part of this book was the primary sources from newpaper clippings to letters to speeches to songs, etc that elevated this history narrative. Huge fan of the narrator Dion Graham. ( )

This book focuses on the Reconstruction era, African Americans that played a huge role during the time period, and how it impacted history from this time. This is a great book for young teens and middle school aged students. I think it would be a great book to incorporate into history classes. ( )

Way too short... Maybe this is just cliff notes or something. I wanted to hear more. ( )

Focus on Reconstruction, history as it impacted blacks, introduction of black heroes and luminaries that young readers may not be aware of. Readers will need to bring background knowledge of the Civil War to better understand this book. A lot of information presented, getting into some nitty gritty of party politics and its players, most of whom most kids may not be familiar with. As a whole, the work feels not very cohesive, a clutter of information, the historian going down the rabbit hole. ( )

I knew that the Union failed Reconstruction. The states should never have been reinstated into the Union in the same configurations as when they left. Majority African American states should have been carved out of the Confederate territories. And anyone who served in the Confederate Army or government should have been barred from ever serving in office again.

This book made me alternately ashamed, horrified, and angry.

It's a chapter of history that will continue to be given short shrift by schools and those who control the schools.

This was a great read. I will read more by Gates. ( )
