This is a great book to share with young children and early readers. It would be fun to share with students and have them share their favorite nursery rhyme. Students could read their favorite rhymes with a partner and draw pictures representing their favorite rhymes. Students could make and illustrate their own little book with favorite nursery rhymes to be reread over and over at school and at home.

This book is a collection of traditional rhymes is a visual treat for children. The book contains a humorous style enlivens 200 rhymes that star both the familiar Mother Goose cast of characters and those not as well known. Some pages are devoted to one rhyme -including all the verses while other pages feature a variety of shorter rhymes or thematic groupings such as verses about weather. Some of the classical rhymes are "Yankee Doodle" and "Hush Little Baby," along with traditional poems such as "Three Little Kittens." This collection is a delightful introduction to poetry as well as an entertaining, comprehensive Mother Goose book.

Readers will be drawn in immediately to this collection of Mother Goose Nursery Rhymes. The illustrations are friendly, expressive, and engaging to children who are attracted to the colors and may be able to contrive the context of the poems or short stories from the artwork prior to reading the text. The lyrical rhythm of the nursery tales is sure to be popular with readers and through repetition even young children may memorize some of these beloved standards. This would be an excellent addition to any classroom study of poetry.

I like this book for three reasons. First, I like this book because the writing flows and is engaging. Each piece of text employs a form of rhyme that increases the flow and increases engagement. For instance, one poem states, “Hey diddle, diddle, the cat and the fiddle.” These two lines in the poem employ a rhyme in the last word of each line, which is “diddle” and “fiddle.” This rhyme increases the flow because it creates a certain rhythm to the text.
Second, I like this book because the plot is organized in order to include numerous rhymes. These rhymes are dispersed throughout the book on many pages. If the poem is short, it may be placed with one or two other poems on the page. However, each rhyme contains its own section of the book or page that clearly demonstrates its individuality. For instance, on page 48, there are two poems listed. These poems are distinguished from each other by the use of boxes surrounding them. One box is formed with a green line and one is formed with an orange line. Thus, despite the many rhymes in the book, each one is organized in a way that distinguishes it from the rest.
Third, I like how the illustrations enhance the story. Each rhyme has its own illustration to accompany it. Furthermore, each of these rhymes is different based on how the poem is. For instance, in the rhyme “Hickory, Dickory, Dock,” there is an image of a clock with a mouse running up it. Despite each poem having its own illustration, the drawings still show unity between all of the pictures because each one is drawn in the same style. This style includes sketches that look as if they are colored in. Thus, the illustrations enhance the story by distinguishing each rhyme as well as joining them all together.
The main message presented in this book is how rhymes can foster imagination and contribute to a person’s feelings of happiness. Each rhyme in the book is unique and different from one’s everyday expectations. The rhymes allow the reader to laugh while reading. Therefore, the big idea is how rhymes can be creative and promote positive feelings. ( )
