The Starless Sea is indeed s t a r l e s s. ( ![]() DNF In the years since I first read this book, it has become the book that lives behind my In Case of Emergency Break glass. When the in-between-books morass has become impenetrable and nothing else sounds appealing, I reread The Starless Sea to remind myself not only that I enjoy reading just for the sake of it and why. The funny thing is after I first read it and before I first reread it, I convinced myself I'd been disappointed in it, that I'd enjoyed it but left it unsatisfied. It wasn't until I returned to it that I realized the truth, which is that I am always disappointed when it ends, because I cannot keep living in its world. I'm never disappointed with the ending, only that it has to end at all. It doesn't feel particularly fair that it can be about infinite stories and mysteries when it itself is finite or that it can be in part about video games but not be a video game. Of course, it's perfect as a book, and it's also about the same longing it provokes, which I quite like as well. my ultimate comfort read and go-to audiobook at bedtime I love a good story that pulls me in and doesn't let go. There is so much to love in The Starless Sea and a few things left unfinished, or maybe I missed something along the way. With this much story, it may take a few read throughs to get to them all. The world building is deep set in magical realism and character descriptions are just enough to allow the reader to create their own images in their mind. And honestly, it seems impossible to capture all that was captured in one book. But she did it, our dear author did it. The journey was long and the beginning was reached...yes I said beginning because there are still so many stories to be told. inga recensioner | lägg till en recension

"Zachary Ezra Rawlins is a graduate student in Vermont when he discovers a rare book hidden in the stacks. As he turns the pages, entranced by tales of lovelorn prisoners, key collectors, and nameless acolytes, he reads something strange: a story from his own childhood. Bewildered by this inexplicable book and desperate to make sense of how his own life came to be recorded, Zachary uncovers a series of clues--a bee, a key, and a sword--that lead him to a masquerade party in New York, to a secret club, and through a doorway to a subterranean library, hidden far below the surface of the earth. What Zachary finds in this curious place is more than just a buried home for books and their guardians--it is a place of lost cities and seas of honey, lovers who pass notes under doors and across time, and of stories whispered by the dead. Zachary learns of those who have sacrificed much to protect this realm, relinquishing their sight and their tongues to preserve this archive, and also those who are intent on its destruction. Together with Mirabel, a fierce, pink-haired protector of the place, and Dorian, a beautiful barefoot man with shifting alliances, Zachary travels the twisting tunnels, darkened stairwells, crowded ballrooms, and sweetly-soaked shores of this magical world, discovering his purpose--in both the rare book and in his own life"-- Inga biblioteksbeskrivningar kunde hittas. |
