This was a reread for research and I realized why nothing stuck from the first time. I was expecting the sexual practices and archaeology from pre-historic Celts across Europe, but this was basically how Christianity ruined sex for the Irish! There was a chapter on earlier practices based primarily on oral tradition and Irish myths, but little of archaeological merit. Most of the book is based in the historic period and most of that during the Christian era. Probably good for what it is, but it was a disappointment for what I was looking for. The back matter is misleading:

"Celtic Sexuality is an excitingly fresh but scholarly look at ancient Celtic society concentrating on its attitudes towards sexual relations. Polemic but well-researched, the author's arguments are sensible and convincing...This work must surely join that small collection of essential studies on early Celtic society." ( )
