The New York Times and USA Today bestselling Murderbot series exploded onto the scene in 2017, and the world has not been the same, since. The series has grown with every release, with book #2 debuting at 95 on the USA Today Bestseller List, #3 at 77, and #4 at 48. A quarter of a million copies later, Murderbot is back in its highly-anticipated, first, full-length standalone novel. Network Effect offers an opportunity like never before for bookstore readers to dive into the series. You know that feeling when you're at work, and you've had enough of people, and then the boss walks in with yet another job that needs to be done right this second or the world will end, but all you want to do is go home and binge your favorite shows? And you're a sentient murder machine programmed for destruction? Congratulations, you're Murderbot. Come for the pew-pew space battles, stay for the most relatable A.I. you'll read this century.-- I'm usually alone in my head, and that's where 90 plus percent of my problems are. When Murderbot's human associates (not friends, never friends) are captured and another not-friend from its past requires urgent assistance, Murderbot must choose between inertia and drastic action. Murderbot spends most of the book in the company of Amena, Dr. Mensah’s teenage daughter. Snark and attitude abound. And ART’s ship is involved too, but what happened to ART?

4.7 stars. The one thing that I consistently (and is really the only thing) take a portion of a star away for is that certain scenes are just really hard for me to follow. I don't know if it's because Wells has a really great grasp of how some of this technology works and just isn't explaining it well enough or that I don't have enough of an understanding about certain things to be able to follow. And sometimes action scenes are hard for me to visualize the space well enough to feel like everything flows. However, this feels like nitpicking in a way because so much of the novel is just so amazing and wonderful.

The snark of Murderbot and other characters is just a joy to read each and every time. The LGBTQ representation is just awesome and natural. And even though Murderbot isn't human, there are so many times I just could relate to something about it.

If you like snarky characters, drop everything you are doing and read this series, starting with All Systems Red. You're welcome.

Content Warning: In one chapter there is a little bit of a graphic and gross description in connection to injury. ( )

Hand-waves a few things, but in a good way. Really well put together and fun. ( )

This is the fifth book in the Murderbot series, and the first full-length novel. It's maybe arguable how well the plot stuff you get in these books works at full length. It may be a bit too slight for that, ultimately, and some of the action scenes worked better for me than others. The climax was wonderfully exciting and interestingly weird, though. And, anyway, the plots, while entertaining enough, aren't the draw in these books. The draw is Muderbot itself, complicated, snarky, strangely adorable killer cyborg that it is. I swear, no matter how much it complains about having emotions -- ugh, emotions -- every time it displays one, it does something to my own stupid human heart, and the moments when it realizes it cares about someone, or someone cares about it just make me go all squishy inside. And there is a lot of that in this one, in between all the kidnappings and shooting and things. Especially as it features one particular relationship that I just love to pieces and was delighted to see developed.

God, I really, really hope there is going to be more of this series.

Rating: 4.5/5, because no matter what the plot is or isn't doing, I can't rate something that does that to my feelings any lower. Awwww. ( )

The adventure, the humor, the fast paced action, in fact all the things that I have come to love about the Murderbot novellas are in this first full length novel, Network Effect by Martha Wells. Murderbot is a rogue Security Unit robot who has managed to hack it’s way into becoming a free-thinking, cranky, cynical and artificially intelligent being that is, in fact, a deadly weapon that excels in protecting its humans. Made from half cloned human material and half inorganic technological parts, it has a lot of human qualities but doesn’t really like most humans all that much. It would much rather be left alone to watch it’s favorite TV shows in peace.

The author takes us from action scene to action scene as Murderbot and some of its current friends are suddenly captured and whisked across space. Things start to really get complicated when the perpetrator is revealed and this leads to even more action as a dangerous rescue mission is called for. Network Effect is a seamless continuation of the story that has been laid out in the first four novellas. One could read it as a stand-alone but the novellas will certainly help to fill in the blanks and give the reader all the insight it needs into the motives and, dare I say it, the feelings that Murderbot expresses.

Network Effect is a great read that has you laughing and cheering at times and then nodding thoughtfully at others. At the end of the book the author gives us a glimpse of what is going to happen next as Murderbot makes a decision about the next phase of its life. Personally I can’t wait until the next great space adventure is available. ( )

Like the series-to-full-length movie format it follows, everything is a bit wider and a bit heavier, but all the hallmarks of the series are there. We get a return of some beloved characters, more dodgy corporate interlopers, more robots-on A.I.-on-robot (and augmented human) action, and a bigger mystery. But now, with a little more room to breathe, Wells draws out all of those elements in a way that extends the enjoyable experience of the novellas, yet doesn't drag. Network Effect is more than twice the size of All Systems Red, but you'll come to the final pages and hardly notice.
