The New York Times and USA Today bestselling Murderbot series exploded onto the scene in 2017, and the world has not been the same, since. The series has grown with every release, with book #2 debuting at 95 on the USA Today Bestseller List, #3 at 77, and #4 at 48. A quarter of a million copies later, Murderbot is back in its highly-anticipated, first, full-length standalone novel. Network Effect offers an opportunity like never before for bookstore readers to dive into the series. You know that feeling when you're at work, and you've had enough of people, and then the boss walks in with yet another job that needs to be done right this second or the world will end, but all you want to do is go home and binge your favorite shows? And you're a sentient murder machine programmed for destruction? Congratulations, you're Murderbot. Come for the pew-pew space battles, stay for the most relatable A.I. you'll read this century.-- I'm usually alone in my head, and that's where 90 plus percent of my problems are. When Murderbot's human associates (not friends, never friends) are captured and another not-friend from its past requires urgent assistance, Murderbot must choose between inertia and drastic action. A thoroughly satisfying installment in the Murderbot series. Matches the preceding novellas perfectly in tone, but definitely earns its full-novel length. I was happy to see the extra page count give the book room to play around a little more with time and perspective. In retrospect there may have been a little meandering/convolution, but while reading I never felt bored or confused.

Something that’s really fun about this series is you always feel that Murderbot is running around in a big world we only see a little piece of, and since its priorities and interests often don’t match up with everyone else’s, elements that in another story would be central are sidelined here. For example, the fact that there are two factions on the planet might in another book be a major reveal that really changes the feel of the planet, the perspectives of the characters, and the politics of the whole situation. As it is, though, Murderbot is only interested insofar as this development affects its ability to protect its humans. It doesn’t stop to figure out which side is right— just hopes they keep shooting at each other long enough it can sneak ART’s crew out.

The cast of characters was a manageable size, with a good mix of new and familiar faces. Mensah, Amena, ART, and Three were my favorites in the supporting cast— Thiago was interesting but felt a little like Gurathin Lite. What’s Gurathin up to, btw? Would love to see him back in the picture.

I would’ve liked to have seen a little more consideration/subversion of the straightforward assumption of “alien bad, now kill it”. It makes sense that Murderbot feels little to no compunctions about destroying targetControlSystem and targetContact, since it’s never been big on complicated philosophical/ethical considerations (as discussed above). And in general, the Murderbot stories tend a little more towards romp than meditation. But maybe this issue will be explored later in the series. Maybe someone will have some lingering side effects from the erstwhile hive mind, after all.

All in all, I loved it. Eager for the next one! ( )

Wow! Action packed throughout with many twists and turns of the plot.

Lots of great character development. We learn far more about ART, who is as devious as they come, and a great character.

And humour, of course. ( )

It was lovely getting a bit more time with Murderbot, and exciting to see ART again. The adventure kept up the pace, explored characters more deeply than before, and offered a new glimpse into the shadows of the setting's universe. Highly enjoyable. ( )

If I could give this 6/5 stars, I would. So many feels. I love where Murderbot and all the other characters end up at the end of this story and just want more of them. ( )

I really liked this continuation of the Murderbot series. Murderbot's snarkiness, the reunion with ART, the action and suspense, etc. made for a fun read. I plan to continue with the next in the series. ( )

Like the series-to-full-length movie format it follows, everything is a bit wider and a bit heavier, but all the hallmarks of the series are there. We get a return of some beloved characters, more dodgy corporate interlopers, more robots-on A.I.-on-robot (and augmented human) action, and a bigger mystery. But now, with a little more room to breathe, Wells draws out all of those elements in a way that extends the enjoyable experience of the novellas, yet doesn't drag. Network Effect is more than twice the size of All Systems Red, but you'll come to the final pages and hardly notice.
