I'm impressed! I loved this story completely, combined with the wonderful writing, it is truly remarkable and captivating.

Obviously I know nothing about the original story. And obviously this isn't something I usually read. Did I feel lost among all those unfamiliar names? A bit, yes. But there is a cheat sheet. Use it! :) And I also knew some of them, since I have read some Japanese manga in the past. And let me just say they're very big on their Gods and Spirits. :)

[Kitsune]

There is some not so hidden meaning in this story, something you can take for yourself and learn from it. Wisdom. Advice. Whatever you want to call it. It teaches you about loss, about friendship and forgiveness.

It was sweet and heartwarming. And I can't believe that ending, I let loose a few tears. I want more!!!

And the artwork is beautiful on the cover. Absolutely worthy of this story. ( )

Re-read May 2020
Reading this after finishing Shinigami, knowing what I know, made this story very bitter-sweet because he chose to forget when he became a yokai ( )

2019-reread. It happened again that once I got into it, I had to finish. Wonderful read that I will revisit every so often. Recommend.
--------------

Once I started reading, I had to finish it. It captured my interest quite strongly.

The only issue was my struggle with the unfamiliar names/terms. That's on me and to be expected due to my lack of experience with Japanese folklore & customs. The author did a fine job translating them within the story and repeating them but I ended up doing a re-read and making my own cheat sheet. ETA: The author made a cheat sheet for readers like me. A link is at the top of the story now, just follow the url to the story and you'll see it :)

It was lovely. It was sweet and a bit suspenseful. The delayed relationship was delicious to read once you knew the reason for the delay. Without the bitter, the sweet isn't as sweet.

It's a keeper that I will re-read and recommend to others. I will think about them in their medieval Japan and look forward to learning more about the original story.

Link to the Noh play which this story is inspired by: http://www.the-noh.com/en/plays/data/program_037.html

As I re-read it, making and using my cheat-sheet, things became clearer for me and I fell in love with it. I bumped it up to 5* (from 4*)

Takamagahara Monogatari = The Story of the High Plain of Heaven
"How big will the Takamagahara Monogatari be? The (current) total count of planned novels, novellas and short stories reaches nine: three novels, two novellas and four short stories. Now the only thing left is to write them." ( )

Since more than 1 friend asked me if this is a HEA, HFN or a tragedy I thought of answering this under a spoiler tag in here and not in the blurb, because I have a very good friend who would strangle me for spoiling the ending in the blurb *wink at my friend*.

It's a HFN
