When Grandma gives you a lemon tree, definitely don't make a face! Care for the tree, and you might be surprised at how new things, and new ideas, bloom. When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. In this imaginative take on that popular saying, a child is surprised (and disappointed) to receive a lemon tree from Grandma for her birthday. After all, she DID ask for a new gadget! But when she follows the narrator's careful--and funny--instructions, she discovers that the tree might be exactly what she wanted after all. This clever story, complete with a recipe for lemonade, celebrates the pleasures of patience, hard work, nature, community ... and putting down the electronic devices just for a while.… (mer)

The little girl in the story receives a lemon tree from her grandma and is unsure what to do with it at first. She keeps it by her the whole time and shows it love. It grows lemons and she makes delicious lemonade with her grandma. She sells the lemonade to buy what she wants. This book is good to show a class because it shows the lesson that is you want something you have to really work for it. ( )

A little girl was expecting something from her long-awaited wishlist for her birthday. But then granny gifted something unusual, really unusual. A lemon tree! What? What happened to the robot dog, headphones, drone, and those many needed things on the list. But no one can say no to a sweet granny. So the little girl pretends to like the gift though she has other plans. What does she do with the lemon tree? What happens to her wishlist?
We picked this book for its attractive cover. And the illustrations are superb, capturing the soul of the book. The book will work as a conversation starter for many aspects, such as making the best of available resources, rejoicing in a moment, and respecting elders. In addition, the book will work well with kids as it combines some humor elements in the storytelling.
When Grandma Gives You a Lemon Tree by Jamie L.B. Deenihan is a witty book for a classroom conversation on values and virtues. ( )

A great lesson on what happens/what you can do when you don't get what you expected.
